Really depends how long you're going to be in town. You're probably not wanting to see historical sites or landmarks, but if so, definitely check out Grand Central Station, the Trump Tower, The Museum of Natural History, the NYC Public Library, and the newest of the bunch, the WTC memorial. I think they may have begun construction on the spire monument now, but the area is still open to the public and you just have to see it to let the gravity of the whole event sink in. Pretty simple to find these places for the most part, most are along the main city line (C or D I think). Also if you like shopping, definitely hit up 5th Avenue (on the south side of Central Park. There's basically great shopping all the way down to the Empire State (go there too, best view of the city). You better check out TimesSquare as well, also home to the best souvenir shops in the city. You'd better see a Broadway show while you're there. You can always find cheap last minute tix in TS at the big ticket booth or thru scalpers. I got tix for Lion King for my g/f and I at Christmas although its supposedly sold out til 2006. Oh yeah, check out the NBC building, go see Conan O'Brien's set, the View, Friends set, all that good stuff. Also if u like Looney Tunes check out the 5 story Warner Bros store. MTV studios is in this area as well, all withing a few blocks of Times Square.
Oh yeah, buy a pretzel while you're there, New York has the best pretzels in North America (that's why I go back home). Only check out the Statue of Liberty if you have a full day to spare and I advise you to go early. By the time you take the subway and ferry out you still have a minimum 2 hour lineup to actually go up the statue. If you're a DJ, then you may be disappointed with New York. Record stores that I know of in the city mostly cater to Deep House or Hip Hop, but if you hit up the Virgin Megastore (the one on or near 47th I believe), they let you rip open all their vinyl and demo it in store... wish they did that at Virgin here. Also, dress warm, my Aunt says that's its been "fucking cold all this week". Oh yeah, swear a lot while you're there, don't stop in the middle of the sidewalk to take pictures, and always barter hardcore with the guys trying to sell you prints, photographs or knockoff luis vitton bags. They always come down with enough pressure. Last bit of advice, be pushy, because if you're not, the newyorkers will cut infront of you for just about everything you do. Just ask anybody about me, I'm a fucking asshole at Plaza parties. :P |

If you're a geek like me, go to The Met. I went 2 days in a row when I was there, and I plan on visting again when I go back in two months. Otherwise, it's all about Harlem for the ultimate culture shock and good, cheap food.
Oh, and go to that restaurant in SoBro where they serve deep fried mars bars. |
