the Vancouver Poetry Slam
heyyyyyyyyyyy.........
i dunno how many of you in here are into spoken word/performance poetry, but the Vancouver Poetry Slam is definitely something you should check out. even if you're not too into poetry, this is far from the stuffy traditional *leaves falling, wind caressing my breast, sad clowns* kinda bullshit you might be expecting when you hear the word "poetry." if you're political, if you're passionate, if you're intellectual, if you're witty, if you're into hip hop that actually says something (like blackalicious, arrested development), then you'd enjoy this. poets have 3 minutes to perform their piece, and are judged by people selected from the audience. in the second round the 5 top poets compete for a modest yet meaningful cash prize. there's also a feature poet who takes the stage half way thru for about 25 mins. it's a fuck of alot of fun to compete in as well as to watch. you'll always leave hearing something that changes the way you look at everyday life. first and third (and fifth) mondays of every month at cafe deux soleils at 2096 commercial drive (at 5th). sign up is at 8, open mic at 845, slam at 9. hope to see some of you there! kim |

ya i'd say having your art critiqued and scored is definitely not something constructive for most artists. the scoring doesn't really matter too much, probably part of the reason the prizes are kinda small. usually turns out that the best poets always lose, but i hope that's not always true, cuz i'm usually in the top 3 hahah. the judges are picked from the audience, hopefully ppl who've never judged before, and aren't really all that connected with anyone in the actual slam. it's not like there's a board of intellect which deems you poetically inept or anything. :P so it's pretty casual and fun. but you should check out the open mic then if ur thinking of reading, and stay to watch the slam.
"we know the scoring means nothing, but we still want to win. it's like praying to a god that you don't believe in." kim |
