Some clubs closing at 3AM as of April 1st
21 clubs will close at 3 a.m. starting April 1
The Province Thursday, March 18, 2004 ADVERTISEMENT Bar owners in Vancouver say they are victims of their own success when it comes to late-night closing times. And because the experimental 4 a.m. closing has attracted so much police attention, many who were granted extended-operating hours are rolling it back an hour. Vance Campbell, a Granville Mall nightclub operator and vice-president of the bar owners' Barwatch, said they will start 3 a.m. closings beginning April 1. "We think 3 a.m. is sustainable, 4 o'clock is not under the current policing costs," said Campbell of the 21 bars he represents. Because of the additional people on the streets due to the later bar hours, club owners were hit with an additional $750,000 in policing costs on top of the $250,000 they already contribute. Campbell also said they are concerned with people from the suburbs flooding the downtown core late at night only to find the bars full. "We have a lot of concern with drinking and driving," he said. "We're hoping other municipalities will move to later openings." Vancouver Coun. Raymond Louie said 3 a.m. may be the best alternative. "It's been very successful, but there's been concerns about safety," said Louie. Two shootings at bars open until 4 a.m. that left five people dead also has raised concerns. Vancouver police Const. Sarah Bloor said police will have to wait and see whether they need fewer officers to patrol late at night. "Not all bars are part of Barwatch," said Bloor. |

Maybe this wouldn't happen if people could actually learn to control themselves when they're drunk, sure it's ok to have a good time, but a lot of it is that the money just isn't there for police to go out and babysit all the people that act like fucking idiots and ruin it for the rest of the people..
they attempted to try to fix the escalating costs by increasing meter hours to 4am so the money from that could fund policing, but people weren't too cool with that either.. I guess people gotta decide what's more important to them *shrugs* |

i heard on the news a month or so back that they were thinking about upping the prices of meter parking around all bars. now thats the stupidest thing i've ever heard. jsut cause ur downtown doesnt mean ur parking to go to drink. stupid campbell

We dont need more cops, we need more busses to transport the drunk dars out of the area!
4 night buses are not enough. I live in two diffretn areas of the city and none of them come close to either home?? Therefor I admit to driving home after a few drinks on some ngihts. I know bad rhia :soak: I remember Sydney's all night life. They had almost ALL buses running at least every hour. Or tons of cabs all over the place. Ppl where taking off right away instead of hanging around cousein trouble if there wernt any bakerys to chill out at I could also bitch about the lack of social responsibility. We have so many homless ppl wondering out side the bars at night. No wonder cops have so much to look out for. |

And still I notice more cops and more transit security here in Vancouver then I remmeber in Sydney. Maybe the ppl get to drunk to bother brawling in Aus? Also intresting how Sydney is twice our population yet I saw FAR FAR LESS homless ppl on the streets day or night. Im not saying homeless ppl are causnig fights. But I think this has to do with alot more ppl on the down town streets at night... why more cops are needed. |
