Anybody who says anything in about Hockey or Boxing without mentioning Wayne Gretzky or Muhammad Ali respectively doesn't understand sports.

this thread is who is ur "favorite" sports player.
Wayne Gretzky, Ali, and the likes of other athletes like this i have much respect for but that doesnt mean they have to be my favorite players.

i disagree
gretzky recieves uber amounts of praise which he deserves

i saw him play in edmonton in 1990
he was definitly amazing. it was such a different game.

but the fact is as great as he was, today he would not be the great one. he would still be a very very good player. but the not the gretzky we remember. the goalies are bigger, and so is there equiptment.

its a much bigger game... all players are tough and can play the puck. there is no longer the playmakers and the goons. guys like tie domi and tyson nash have been forced to learn to play the puck.

so yes appreciate gretzky because in todays game no one will ever have a chance to break any of his records. but i think it would be so interesting to see gretzky in his prime playing today. cuz just ask nasland everyone is fair game and it would be crazy to see gretzky play the physical game

of course he wouldnt be the wayne of old now adays thats goes without saying for all sports, athletes are all getting bigger and have a tons more knowledge and tools to there disposel, its unfair to compare athelets from different eras, you have to look at wayne in his era, the MAN, leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else.

Its totally unfair to compare players from different eras, considering all the tools players have at there disposel not to mention all technology and knowledge they have that wayne didnt, you have to look at him for what he did in his era, completly dominate it hands down, he was leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else.

i agree

as i said gretzky deserves everything he recieves

he dominated his era like no has ever has or ever will

i just saying with todays game...no one has the ability to dominate like that anymore. it just cant happen. the game is too physical.

so we will never see numbers put up by guys like gretz, bossy, orr, howe. etc.

so i guess i wasnt really disagreeing with you in the first place, i just wish i could see some of my childhood hockey heros play todays game. cuz todays era compared to gretz's is night and day

Gretyzky would have dominated any era other than maybe the 60's. When coaches were very reluctant about offense, and more worried about defense *cough*montreaL*cough*

in the 80's the oilers, glen sather and gretzky redesigned the offensive game to include the run and gun style of scoring.

In the 90's most teams are defensivly minded, but say on a team like vancouver gretzky could still easily achieve a 150 point season in my opinion.

If naslund got 104 points in 2002-03 i believe grezky in his prime would do much better. Nothing against naslund but as a playmaker he has nothing on gretzky
