stay away from pre-made food.
pasta and rice are your new best friends.
keep the 1-900 calls to a minimum.
learn to cook.
at least 1 pot and pan each.
fork. knife. spoon. cup. toilet paper.
toothpaste.
towel.
laundry detergent. baking soda will suffice.

and so on.

Make sure you have plenty of TP and lightbulbs... they tend to run out at inconvient times...

Always have more money than you think you are going to spend, especially when grocery shopping.... you find things you didn't consider before, and most people tend to pick up some extra's

Places like Cosco and Superstore are your friends... buy food in bulk, package into meals or whatnot when you get home. Dollar stores are also your friend, for the incidental things.

Bills are always more than you would expect them to be.

^Dope! im on it. rent includes hydro cable etc etc. just not a fone. Im just worried about food and kitchen utensils and that. I won't know what i need until i need it.
I started a HUGE tupperware box at my parents house and every few days add a few items of non-perishables. So that i have some shit when i first leave.

I just moved out for the first time myself and it was accross the country, so the only thing i could bring was clothes and some pictures of friends. But so far I've realized that BC is much more expensive then NS!!The best place to grocery shop is defenitly Superstore, stay away from Safeway....Safeway is BAD!! Like mentioned before TP is very important to have lots of and same with rice and milk...other then that everything else is a luxury to me now!heh good luck!

If you're buying produce of any kind, stay out of the supermarkets, they'll rip you off wholesale. If you live near smaller grocers (like on Commercial drive) they are your friends, and cost virtually nothing. Even if you like meat, consider switching a lot of your meals to veggetarian - you'll spend about half as much on food.

Never shop at Safeway unless you can't avoid it, or are only going for the club card shit.

(even then they get you - either bagels are on sale, or cream cheese. NEVER BOTH AT ONCE)

dollar stores will definitely become your best friend. they have everything you'll need - plates, cups, utensils, garbage bags, etc. saves a LOT of money.

keep your apt very simplistic. it can still be very comfortable and nice even if it's super simple. mine is right now and it saves cleaning time too! a lot less clutter.

if you can, get a fido phone. that way you can avoid getting a landline all together, and you still won't go over 40 bucks a month. reception isn't their forte at all, but still...you can't really go wrong with 40 unlimited. that's the only one thing i wish i could do right now. i don't have a landline and it's just my cell, but i'm with rogers and still have a year left on my contract.

just constantly budget your money and stay aware of how much you have in your bank account. it's so easy just to spend a bit here and a bit there, and once you realise how much is gone, it's already too late. use common sense...that's about it!

1.) Use paper plates and cups... cause cleaning them is a bitch
2.) Keep parties to around 2 max a month
3.) Make sure your landlord isn't a fucking loser and when you wake up you find him in your house claiming that he came to check the furnace.... more like checking to see if we lit up the basement...
4.) Don't let your landlord fuck you.
5.) This doesn't happen to me because my friends arn't hurting, but if your friends are.. i would suggest letting your friends know that they clean after themselves if they are over.... and be considerate and dont completely empty the food supply.. lol
6.) instant rice dishes are your best friend
7.) try not to order too much food.... for the first 2 months i lived on my own i never once made a meal... 3 meals a day i just ordered.... and my heart started to hurt.. lol... it felt like body was clogged with fat up to my throat or something... it wasn't fun...

If I hadn't already given you karma today, you would have gotten it for that post.

THe small grocers on Commercial are RAD. THe prices and the produce is SO MUCH BETTER than any of the big stores.

My tips:
Buy meat in bulk then portion and freeze it
Ziplock freezer bags are your friend
Cheese is way more expensive than you think
Have a land line or a cell, not both
Don't live with rav0rs. (;))

THose are the best tips I can give you.

Get a library card if you dont have one... read books.. free and time consuming.. and its make you smarter or sumthin? hehe.

Dont go see movies for 15 bucks at the theatre. read a book.
Don't take your date out to restaurants. Eat instant rice dishes, then read romantic books together. Cut back on any alcohol/ illicit drug use, read a book :) Free entertainment is good entertainment.
