Working with special needs kids takes a special kind of dedication and patience, you're lucky to have those qualities!
I worked at afterschool daycare where there was afterschool homework clubs which was gratifying. Working with preschool kids is totally important as they will remember your good qualities for the rest of their lives. But I hear ya, it's not challenging you as a person and utilizing your skills.
Right now I'm working as tutor/mentor for aboriginal kid in the inner-city school system. It's not my career path, but it's something that I'm interested in and feel deeply towards. It's really humbling and the pay ain't bad either.
