Parties in Europe?
Summer is almost here!
Heading to Europe this summer to backpack around. What are some of the names of big parties going on there? I know most of them from Amsterdam (we are going to Sensation Black and Dance Valley) and I heard Love Parade was cancelled due to money probs, but what else is going on? |
|

love parade cancelled?! woah, that would be the epitome of suck.
i don't know of any specific parties, but really, most major european cities have such incredible nightlife that raves, as we know them, are really secondary. especially in places like berlin and madrid, clubs are open to the wee hours of the morning, are massive, and have a great vibe and incredible music. if anything, i'd try to hit up some of the big music festivals that tour europe in the summer (the names of which again escape me) but otherwise just try to befriend a local (cool taxi drivers serve this function well) and find a club where the locals (and the backpackers in the know) go. i spent 4 months backpacking europe last summer, if you had any specific questions just ask, i'd love to help. |

Hey lithe! I take it you had a blast on your trip? Any particularily sweet things you did/saw? Is getting that eurail pass for unlimited travel actually worth the 1300 bucks? Heard there is a lot of extra fees along the way. We plan to see quite a few countries though...
Do I need to get a visa for prague/poland ahead of time, or do they just issue one at the borders? ..and Babi-xtc (cool name btw) don't worry, I'll party twice as hard for the both of us this year and you do the same the next =) Well that's of course if I just don't decide to live on the beach somewhere in Spain the rest of my life and own a bar or something. |

the unlimited eurail is really only worth it if you travel long distances really frequently in countries like france, germany, switzerland, and benelux. in eastern countries, as well as greece, italy, spain, and portugal, it's a lot cheaper to either take the bus or do point-to-point rail tickets. i had an unlimited purely because my dad bought it for me as he was concerned about me, as an 18 year old girl, going alone, and wanted me to have the ability leave whenever or wherever i wanted if i felt uncomfortable. there were some extra fees, such as reservation, but if you're tight on cash the reservation fees really aren't that necessary (you may get stuck standing in the hallway, with hundreds of other people, in a car that doesn't have air conditioning in milan in august however... yeah that sucked.)
i had an amazing time. it's really the best thing i've ever done. some of my favourite places/cities/hostels/events: ~ Berlin. such an incredible city. club: Cookies. bar: white trash. hostel: circus ii (the one with the bar). event: the gay pride weekend at the end of june. so much fun. ~ Munich. as amazing as berlin, but way more laid back. if you go to munich, you MUST do mike's bike tours. highlights include nudie spotting, jumping into a man made river, and tons of stops at beer gardens. ~ Amsterdam. the Anne Frank haus, the Flying Pig downtown hostel, the special peach tea and brownies... such a good time. ~ Rome. Romeing All Over walking tours and pub crawls... if sam from NY is still there tell him robin says hi. ;) ~ Santorini. the red sand beach. ~ Ios. god. everything. it's madness (and so frigging cheap!) ~ Granada. the alhambra. the rambudan hostel. ~ Cinque Terre. the incredible, cheap white wine, the best gelato i've ever had, and a beautiful hike with incredible scenery. ~ Switzerland. because you're in a postcard. ~ Paris. it's Paris. c'mon. i have yet to go to prague or poland, but i've heard both are amazing and try not to miss them. don't rush your trip too much, i went for a little under four months, and had originally planned to only see 5 countries, but ultimately saw 11. however, i spend 10 nights in some places (berlin, paris) and 2 in others. don't plan a lot of 1-nighters, you'll get really burnt out. don't plan on sleeping on trains, even if you get couchettes the rooms are the size of small closets and trying to sleep while moving is very disconcerting. don't drink every night, i gained 30 lbs, haha. stay in hostels, and make every effort to meet people. the people are what makes the trip. take lots, and lots, and lots of pictures, and remember... you'll always go back. the travel bug is catching. |

love parade, or at least some fascimile, was on last summer. i know because i missed it and spent the rest of my trip hearing about how fantastic it was, same with the running of the bulls, etc, etc. [thank god my idea of "fantastic" doesn't equal having to sleep in parks that smell like urine cuz all the hotels and hostels are booked up, like a suprising number of aussie's did.]

let me know if you have any idea where you're going in europe cause i know a lot of mega clubs that are really fxcking awesome and i would love to recommend them to you. i also know some SWEET small irish pubs and smaller joints of the like. are you planning to stay in hostels? if you are, hit me up for info on that too. i stayed at some REALLY awesome ones and some really shitty ones (that were popular but i would NEVER recommend them to anyone). there are reviews online too so you should always search as much as you can.
you're going to have so much fun. i'm so addicted. i wish i didn't have to do summer semester cause i wanted to travel...maybe take another upcoming semester off once things are more stable with school, or take a full year off after i finish my undergrad and go all over again. i love european lifestyle. |

Kandyapple...this guy that I fell in <3 with when I was in Munich lives in Berlin. I'll give him and shout and find out all of the hot spots for you. :)
Ryantron (and Kandyapple)...my MSN is [email protected] Definitely best way to contact me cause I don't always check all the threads. |

mojo: yeah, it was amazing. whenever i'm supposed to be studying (ie now) i'll pull out my journals and photo albums and pout about how incredible a time i was having, and how lacking my life is currently.
kandyapple: berlin - you have to go to tresor, just because. it wasn't my favourite, but it's so famous, it's a must. (plus it's so unlike anything you'll see in vancouver.) i also loved cookies, but the scene changes so fast that it may not be the in thing anymore, when you get there. erica: are you going to go back to europe? i think i'm going to do the swap work abroad program after i graduate next may, and am trying to decide whether i want to live/work in london, or australia... i loved europe too, but fuck, i want to see the whole world! McJohn: [email protected] :) |

Greece is also wayyyyy cheaper than Ibiza, with a younger crowd - late teens, early 20s, instead of the 30something gay crowd Ibiza pulls (with the exception of Mykonos, which is very "old", and very gay). Go to Ios. It's revelry at its best... pure, unadulterated fun.

the Reconquista
McJohn, why bother planning this trip, we both know you & tom will be sharing a spanish jail cell with a 250lb former gigolo named Raoul Sanchez because most customs employees know that no one needs 37 thousand 'tylenols' for one week in ibiza. It's all good Bueckes & I will party hard for you. Ah hedonism.

ibiza is only about a hundred dollars to get to from london. Greece would be cool but the olympics are there this year so my guess is its not going to be all that cheap... I'm taking my chances in Ibiza this summer and I have a feeling I won't be let down. :)

dude, it's cheaper than that...check out easyjet.com, only about 25 quid from luton or gatwick i think ;) ...plus there's no way you'll be let down; even if you rupture your spleen u can probly still heard the 'oonz oonz oonz' from the clubs while sitting in your hospital room

ryantron, the brighton beach parties are no more.... after a quarter of a million people showed up at the last one in 2002 the party was scuttled.. i was there and it was absolute chaos. brighton was pretty much destroyed.
as for the loveparade, yep, it's dead: http://www.dw-world.de/english/0,336...169614,00.html The UK's festivals are the best known: glastonbury, homelands, creamfields, gatecrasher summer sound system, the big chill.. these aren't really raves, just some of the world's biggest parties that run usually 'til about 6AM. expect 100s of thousands at Glasto and anywhere from 10 - 80 thousand at homelands, creamfields, mardi gras. ibiza... it may be the disney of clubbing but it is something else. if you can afford it, go. truly amazing after-afterhours clubs and just the weirdest vibe. europe is great.. i came travelling through it two summers ago and loved it so much i ended up moving here :) i live in london and have gotten to know this city pretty damn well, especially the party hot spots, so email me if you are planning on coming through this city and want to know what's up. |
