Well when I decide to rip something it ususally ends up being a SVCD, and the tool for that is the DVD2SVCD suite, a collection of programs that let you do just that. It takes about 6 hrs on my 2.4 GHz 1GB RAM desktop to do that, but it's okay as an over night process.
If you don't want it as SVCD [well the program dumps the files as .bin/.cue, usually about 3 on a very good quality setting] you could use Daemon Tools to mount it as virtual CDs and then something else to rip them as XVid/DivX/whatever. What that 'something else' is, I could not tell you for sure, since I never used it. |

and yes, its to back up my dvd collection. i have almost 1200 dvds, so i want to have them in avi format so i can burn them one day if something happens. i don't want to have 1200 burnt dvds around my house. i would rather throw them on one of my externalsm which would fit them easily. also, it doesn't take that long to do. with the program i have now, it takes 60 mins to rip a dvd, but the res of it goes down to 8x6 for some fucked up reason and i can't change it. i want full screen. so i'm still looking. |

As I said, only decent Free (as in both beer and speech) software I've been able to find has been the DVD::Rip Perl module for Linux. Mostly because the DeCSS libraries are only mostly commonly found in Linux. Because DeCSS is against the law in the states (Go DMCA!) and there are already DVD decryption programs that are actually authorized by the MPAA, it's HIGHLY unlikely you're going to find any legal versions available for free, at least that rip at as decent a quality as something like DVD::Rip (which gives you full control over bitrates, codecs, etc. etc. etc.
Good luck though. If you find anything please report back to the class. |
