i think it depends on what it says.. i would get one if it was something really disturbing, and so all the non-asian people would say that it was pretty and whatnot, while the ones who knew what it meant would be scared of me. it would be funny.

i haven't seen that many japanese tattoo's... i've seen a lot of chinese or japanese kanji... but no hiragana/katagana. seeing something korean would be cool. if you really want to have an oriental tattoo, try having a whole poem tatted on ur back or body part... and understand it. a foreign tatty on ur body that you dont understand is as cheesy as those cheap $15 shirts with ugly and incorrect oriental words on them. |

^^IT'S SOOO TRUE!!
I'm suddenly reminded of my litte sister's backpack from japan saying some shit like "hello kitty likes to tea party. tea party is fun. have a nice day!" YES, it looks THAT stupid. --Joanne :P Last edited by Joanne; May 04, 04 at 08:02 AM. |

Who cares if it's played?
Ultimately what matters is that you like the tattoo and that it is symbolic and significant to YOU. We all have different standards for beauty, so maybe some people find getting a word tattooed in another language more appealing. Since when do we have to conform to the idea that we should only tattoo words in our own language on our bodies. I have a rose tattooed on my lower back, a lot of people will tell me this is "played out" I could honestly care less. I designed my rose and it symbolizes the transition from childhood to adult hood for me, which is something I experienced when I was 14. I can go on about its other symbolic content but that's not the point, what i'm saying is people should respect other peoples decisions. My next tattoo ( which i'm getting done on May 15th) is the astrological symbol for leo with the Japanese character of Happiness overtop it. My name Shadi means happiness in Persian, I don't quite like how it looks written out in Persian though so i've decided to get it done in Japanese. Now, I don't speak Japanese nor have I ever been to Japan but I don't see how that makes me more or less eligible to get this tattoo. |

I dont think it is fair to say all of it it played...if a person could find sumthing original not liek love, strength, power etc than sure why not. I speak fairly good Japanese, i can read alot of kanji, and i lived in japan for 6 months. I have a tattoo on my back that is in kanji, but i didnt pick it outta a book...its not one of the many kanji u can find in the tattoo parlor. I knew what i wanted way before goin to get it done. I actually find that japanese and chinese look rather classy.

played isnt a bad thing. with tattoos there are always the usual things people get like dragons, tigers, chinese/kanji, tribal. im actually imprsessed that even thoguh so many peopel get these that they can continue to keep drawing different ones world wide and still having them look sick. im not an artitst myself so i find this quite interesting others may not

odd... i love clothing with bad grammer. the ones where u can totally tell it was made in china / hong kong and the designer / copycat altered the saying so as not to get sued. Quote:
as for the lingo deal, some artists have a stereotypical view and what not. if you don't understand the saying or word being printed on your back, it could be the incorrect meaning for you. the artist could also intentionally print something else on your back and you would never know it. one chinese / japanese kanji character can hold 1-10 different definitions. |

chek out my tatty. see if its played out. its actually original since i havnt seen anyone with that. i already hav a comment sayin that it is 'played' out. i personally dont think it is. i am chinese so i think im allowed to hav those kind of characters on my body. but hey, its ur opinion. everyone who has seen it says it looks wicked and its not even done yet.
