hah Ive seen Living Legends live in Kamloops, I wasnt impressed actually...NWA spawned an entire fucking GENERATION of admittedly inferior work, but still, mad props to the original ORIGINAL gangsters.

VERY true....you like real hip hop, Atmosphere is a damn good start, All Natural, Aesop Rock, Anticon, Buck 65, Deep Puddle Dynamic, Eyedea, Mob Deep, Grouch And Eligh, MF Doom, Murs, Slug....the lsit goes on...but if you consider yoruself a hip hop guru, you need to know these boys.

I'd say Run DMC, NWA, or even the Beastie Boys. Though I've been more into Undergroud Hip-Hop lately (or "Intelligent Hip-Hop"). Those appear to be mostly solo artists.

"rap is something you do, hip hop is something you live" ... to quote the mighty KRS

most of those 'mainstream' rappers didn't just pop out of nowhere, you know.... some are manufactured like regular pop stars, but a lot of them come from the streets and have spent long, hard, pennyless years working towards their success... not becuase they were guaranteed bytches & bling at the end, but because they live & breathe hip hop, and they'd still be doing it even if they hadn't found success.... outsiders like you & me are in no position to judge them.

jedi mind tricks and all the other verbally complex groups/MC's are usually the best...

to me its al about a beat that is clean and smooth, that can mold with the verses. the verses must have variety...i mean consisting with multi's, meta's, good punchlines, rhyme structure, verbal content, and most importantly, flow...i cant listen to most mainstream rap nowadays cuz it lacks lots of those elements.
