Im bored, and was kinda wondering...
anyone here experience the rave scene in the early 90s? or know anyone who did? (brothers or sisters) and if so, what was it like, similar to parties today? I kinda have an idea, but just wonderin if someone could spell it out who actually experienced it... |

1995-96 parties were still generally more of a 'hippie/clubkid' kind of scene, not that Vancouver really had clubkids...but you get what i mean
there was more of a funky style..if i had a scanner i'd scan ya a pic it was a lot of bright colors, braids and such much smaller, a lot of time you were flyered as you shopped downtown venues were actually pretty secret a lot more 'fun type' stuff like ball rooms and bubble blowers and the crowds were older not old, but not 15 maybe more LSD? at least, that was my experience |

If you really want to talk to an old fart that helped build electronic music in Vancouver and threw tons of 'Raves' in the early 90's (91-94ish), you need to talk to James Brown... he was there before it started and he's still kickin around somewhere, and he dented the side of my one-ton rental truck with his head... what more could you ask for. |

I started in 98...i just caught the tailend of when it was cool to go raving.....i can say yeah the parties back then were more "vibey" cause i can remember leaving many parties with more people then i came with...the drugs were a little moe rampant and a bit more expensive....everyone was 20something or really late teens....fun fur pants and phat pants...candy...plur...it was everywhere.....the music is a little better now, although back then you really had to phone and info line to find out where the party was. I can remember tons of parties being such well kept secrets that i wouldnt find out about it till sat morning and it was still reasonable to go on last minute and know you werent gonna be stuck paying an arm or a leg to party. other then that pretty much the same.

b) that venue has been used by numerous people on countless occations for many years, so if any one person thinks that they can lay claim to it - especially since it's a public park - they can fuck right off. |

Let's just say it was way easier to maintain a happy audience. People were around to have a good time regardless of the sound or lighting set-up and video...who the hell could afford that. Generally tickets back then were about$20.00 a ticket. I remembering partying many times at the New York Theater I think it was on commercial. It wasn't neccessarily better just different. Many of todays promoters spend alot of time and money on decor and set-ups but back then all you needed was a couple of speakers and a few cheese lights and hey the crowd made the party happen. Now the audience members are expecting so much more from the aprties and rightly so. When you are paying $50 to get into a party it should be the best it can be but no matter how hard anyone tries there will always be the negative people that can't help themselves from bashing at least some protion of an event. The produciton and Visuals have come a long way and look and sound way better than parties ever had no if we could only bring back the vibe from those days then we would have a scene to be extremly proud of.
