Plus, I listened to the two demos. Seany G's has decent grooves and solid flow, but it's not really trance. Prog all the way (so I nominate him for the Prog DJ Idol contest).

dSl-DuDe's is not all that good, really. Oh, the tracks are fine but there is just no momentum to them. It's anthem trance to the extreme (re: 'not' trance); once you feel a good gurn going, out goes the rhythm for a breakdown and buildup that lasts a good 30-120 seconds. Fine for a track to start, perhaps a track in the middle, and one towards the end, but track after track after track of it is just stupid, especially when some of these tracks have two breakdowns. How can dancers get into the music when you take away the element of trance music that lets us dance all the time(re: rhythm)? And, no, jumping up and down with the hands in the air a la a Tiesto concert is not dancing. I'd rather be getting my White Man's Wobble going than standing around waiting for some rhythm that would never have been taken out by a competent DJ anyways. I'd have fucked off to another room where the rhythm is at least consistant throughout by the time that third breakdown hit (something like a fifth of the way through the set).

Am I being a bit too critical to an up-an-coming DJ? Perhaps. However, I call it as I hear it and I would hope dSl-DuDe will take this critisism to heart when he plays out: keeping a consistant momentum of a set is incredibly important aspect of DJing. Don't kill that momentum with too many breakdowns, especially after you've built up momentum with a breakdown. Nothing kills momentum more than another breakdown too soon.

This was my first "official" mix I have ever done, and I am still pretty new to spinning.. I do realize that there is a LOT of improvement needed and I did not expect this mix to be anywhere near perfect

and yes.. my collection mostly contains anthem trance, its the music I love,

thanks for the tips, and I will definately keep those in mind, however I do believe you're assessing "us" on an extreme level, especially for a newb..

Great point. Just getting the name and demo out there seems to be the first major step; there are a LOT of DJs out there. I almost wonder if DJ/Promoter is the next logical step after party-kid, since I've seen a bunch of the people that were really into partying when I started being the ones running/spinning the parties now.

On a slightly unrelated note, Rhia, you are currently funking up my house :) Damn, you guys are going to make me like house again.

Well, I'm one of those kind of guys that believes the best way to teach a kid to swim is to toss them into the lake (figurativly, of course). :P

Tough critisism can be one of the best things for those serious about any profession or craft; not only does it point out the flaws in something that friends or family may be too kind to point out, but it also challenges that person to overcome those flaws, to strive for better, so they can come back to that orginal critic and shove those words right back in their face. ;)

Mirka is playing on another stage and she already plays a ton @ the drink and other events.

The problem is there is an overabundance of great talent in Vancouver across alot of genres and promoters now have the task of picking and choosing who to add to their rosters. Friends? New talent? Rising stars? Or the the tried and tested? This is one of the dilemmas we faced with our event and Evolve/Mixology/Photonic has wrestled w/ for Apex. They've managed to cram something like a dozen djs on their lineup and for this I applaud them. Its a great mix of new and recent talent on that stage.

Everyone knows that there is a lack of shows to play and and therefore an abundance of talent in Vancouver.
It's a well known fact that you have to work your PR skills to get played! You have to have connections or else you aren't going anywhere.
Thats just part of this buisness.

I hope the renegade stages manage to get ahold of some of the people on this forum for their rosters; like I've stated, a travesty to overlook so much great talent in Vancouver.

I think everyone (obviously) wishes more new talent could be played. Remember, the big local DJ's we see now had to fight their way to the top and so can anyone else as long as they have skills (dj and people skills) and are a nice person.

Another thing is that now everyone wants to be a superstar DJ. Sure little jimmy could go out and buy a guitar and learn simple chords for 2 years or he can go get a set of decksa nd learn in a matter of months and be a star in no time (or so the common myth goes).

A TRAVESTY? Hahahaha hardly. That's the buisness my friend. Deal with it! Sink or swim. Why are you making it sound so terrible? Have you had trouble being booked?

You think this is bad? Try living in the UK. It's damn near impossible to land a gig there (says BPM magazine, IDJ, and many of the UK Dj's that have made it)!!!

Like I said mate, young DJs are going to have to deal with it. You've been around for a while man, I though you would have realized that this is a tough buisness to be in! :) No sense in complaining!

Sean, I'm not complaining. I have no right to complain, I'm already booked. I understand this is a tough business, obviously, I was just pointing out to you guys that there is alot of good skilled talent here in the city and no matter who wins, people shouldn't think less of the runners up.
