Second Jobs....?
Who's got a second job and how do you manage it?
I'm also wondering whether most employers would be less enthusiastic about hiring someone who can only put in around 2-3 days a week max... I'm back on the job hunt for job #2, my current job is only giving me 18 hours a week since they hired more people... |

I used to work 2 jobs - would start 1 at 9am, and get off the second at 2am... Weekends off of both though. I managed by confining all social activity to weekends only, and going out and making the most of them as stress relief. |

I've had two jobs for the past 2 months. If you plan on getting a second job, my only advice to you is to be very firm on how many hours a week you are willing to take on. Against my better judgement, i took on the responsibilty of working 7 days a week between my two jobs. I will be stuck in this position until the school year rolls around...
On one hand i will be making lots of money and i will be able to afford tuition when september comes... but on the other hand, it's at the expense of my social life and maintaining a low stress level. If you do find a second job, just explain to your boss that you are going to school and that you will need the money for tuition... in my experiences, most people are generally more than happy to help out a student. |

In my opinion..working two jobs SUCKS! I have been working two jobs for almost 2 years now.. Major stress. Sometimes I work any where from 48-76 hours a week. It takes a toll on your body and your mind. Most employers dont really mind if you have another job, as long as you are clear about your availability! Also.. try to have at least one day off a week or else you might find yourself working 4 weeks straight without a day off!! Good luck =)

wow, you guys are hard-core 2-jobs-ers...
I'm not so sure about investing 70 hours a week like LLaaUUrrYYn... but i was thinking 2 days a week at my current job (since they're only giving me 3 days a week anyway) and 3 days a week at the other... Regardless, I'd like to be able to pay off my debt and still have some spending cash by the time school starts... |

i always try to do 2 jobs..just cuz its hard for retail to give u a lot of hours..when ure part time. i do mon, weds and thurs at old navy..and friday, sat and sun at footlocker (since its usually busiest over the weekend.. footlocker = commission). and i have my day off on tuesdays. YES my first job does treat me like crap now that i have a 2nd job, but it doesn't really matter.. i have a fixed personal task every week so they need to give me my hours. i like doin the 2 job thing because now i get paid every week and some weeks i get more hours than most full timers do.. more than 40 hours a week. money is really really good. last week i ended up workin 54 hours which kicked ass. i also like it because it changes things up a bit.. so i dont get sick of one single job.. one job i just stand there as a cashier and other i have to sell sell and sell. i like it... no complaints.

I kinda like 2 jobs. Because I get so board/sick of one so the other acts like a break. I find it helps if you have one job that is steady like mon-fri. Then the second one is a shift job so you just tell your employer what you availability is.
Last spring I found my coffee house job (shifts) With out telling I landed a 40 hour daycare job a few months later. So I asked my boss at the coffee place to change my shifts to part time around my new job. Again my boss is great and suports alot of us who manage to find somthign better to work at too. LAst summer I think I did up to 68 hours a week with both jobs!!! It wasnt that bad though because the jobs where so diffrent and both had a realax feel to them at times so I wasnt drained. I think when it comes to hireing most employers rather take someome who isnt at a second job or is prefebly avaliable anytime. AT my store witch usualy only has part time shifts will still not take some excelet ppl who only want part time. So like I did... make your new job your priority and try to make the old one work around it. Kinda sneaky but I think its better understood by your old emplyer when you find sotmhing you like better and shows a lill respect that you would still like to keep your old job too :) |
