Ack! My riding went Conservative by 45 votes. I really hope the NDP Candidate, Steve McClurg, manages to win on the recount. That would shift the balance of power back to the NDP/Liberals.
OK, so less of a gong show than I was expecting. And the green party passed the 4% mark. Good for them. Now maybe they can grow a well-rounded platform and get some real support in the future. Biggest not-so-good realization: The Liberals and the NDP were splitting each other all over the place, letting the Conservatives snatch up just enough to be real pains in the ass (aka ensuring a minority and keeping the Liberals/NDP from a majority by 1 SEAT). Oh well, we'll see what happens... All I know is it could be a lot worse. At least Stephen Harper - the man with the lego hair - isn't the prime minister. This feels like the US Bush/Gore election, if it went the Gore way. Not great, but the best we could hope for. |

They will prevent Paul Martin from implement the US Missle Defense system in Canada, and push for human rights and environmental rights. It's the best minority government this country could have hoped for. |

ask your parent's if they won 50k in a lottery what would they do with it first? buy a BMW or pay off the mortgage? i can agree with their intentions, but they way which they aim to achieve them are not realistic. |

p.s i dont disagree with their values or ultimate goals..i simply disagree with the method by which seek to achieve them. also i think the results of the election are pretty telling, alot more canadians it seems agree with the views of the liberal party and conservative parties of canada, then the NDP party. only about 15% of canadians agree with the NDP party if we are to beleive the results of the election. Hmmm... keep in mind that the popular vote in certain places was VERY close. There are 3 ridings up for recounts where the Conservatives won by less than 100 votes, at about 35% of the vote. That means 65% of people voted for the Liberals/Greens/NDP. That's a vote-split... The majority voted center-left, but due to multiple parties, they got the right-wing.
It shows you a hole in politics, and goes a long way to explain why the conservatives and alliance merged (the same thing happened to them last election). |
