It's looking like the best election in years. Liberals with a minority, and the NDP as co-pilots. This could be one of the most exciting generations for canada yet.

Ack! My riding went Conservative by 45 votes. I really hope the NDP Candidate, Steve McClurg, manages to win on the recount. That would shift the balance of power back to the NDP/Liberals.

OK, so less of a gong show than I was expecting. And the green party passed the 4% mark. Good for them. Now maybe they can grow a well-rounded platform and get some real support in the future.

Biggest not-so-good realization: The Liberals and the NDP were splitting each other all over the place, letting the Conservatives snatch up just enough to be real pains in the ass (aka ensuring a minority and keeping the Liberals/NDP from a majority by 1 SEAT). Oh well, we'll see what happens...

All I know is it could be a lot worse. At least Stephen Harper - the man with the lego hair - isn't the prime minister. This feels like the US Bush/Gore election, if it went the Gore way. Not great, but the best we could hope for.

^I think that a minority government could be good for Canada in the way that it's gone. This way, the Libs HAVE to work with the NDP, which means we are going to see more responsible and accountable government. The NDP isn't going to let the Liberls get away with SHIT, and will constantly be reminding them that they (the Libs) only hold the government with the NDP's help.

Well, assuming that the NDP and Liberals are basically working together, they still need 1 more vote (from the BQ, CP, or Chuck Cadman) to actually pass anything.

Most split government ever.

We're talking about Canadian politics here Sean. In case you forgot most Canadians views are more accurately reflected by the NDP's policies than the Frasier Institues. The ecconomy is important, but it's not the only factor that determines people's quality of life. Anyway I'm just telling you stuff you already know so I'll shut up now.

The NDP policy is anything but misguided, you've simply failed to read or understand it.

They will prevent Paul Martin from implement the US Missle Defense system in Canada, and push for human rights and environmental rights. It's the best minority government this country could have hoped for.

umm no you failed to understand it..they will also prevent paul martin from using a budget surplus to pay down the deficit, and instead get him to direct it towards largely ineffectual enviornmental and health programs..

ask your parent's if they won 50k in a lottery what would they do with it first? buy a BMW or pay off the mortgage?

i can agree with their intentions, but they way which they aim to achieve them are not realistic.

heh..the fraiser institutes policies dont reflect my beliefs either...infact most of their policies are just as flawed as those of the NDP.

p.s i dont disagree with their values or ultimate goals..i simply disagree with the method by which seek to achieve them.

also i think the results of the election are pretty telling, alot more canadians it seems agree with the views of the liberal party and conservative parties of canada, then the NDP party. only about 15% of canadians agree with the NDP party if we are to beleive the results of the election.

Hmmm... keep in mind that the popular vote in certain places was VERY close. There are 3 ridings up for recounts where the Conservatives won by less than 100 votes, at about 35% of the vote. That means 65% of people voted for the Liberals/Greens/NDP. That's a vote-split... The majority voted center-left, but due to multiple parties, they got the right-wing.

It shows you a hole in politics, and goes a long way to explain why the conservatives and alliance merged (the same thing happened to them last election).

Well good to hear someone as well read as yourself doesn't take the Frasier Institute to be gospel. I guess it's simply a difference of opinion on the way to get to the same goals that we disagree on. Anyway I think that under proportional representation we would see quite a bit more support for the NDP as people would be less inclined to vote "strategically." Also I think as people start to realize that the Green party is socially conservative and environmentally weak a lot of their support will move back over to the NDP. At the highest end of things I'd put their support nationally in the high 30's and at the lowest at around 20% (based on the Green plus NDP popular vote combined).
