update on NEW YEARS RAVES~
from the Richmond Review today..............
11/26/2001 New Year’s rave at Bridgepoint opposed by RCMP By Martin van den Hemel A bid to hold a New Year’s Eve rave at BridgePoint Market suffered a serious setback Friday afternoon. Rave promoter Riel Roussopoulos met with RCMP Supt. Ward Clapham and RCMP operations officer Insp. Tonia Enger Friday but failed to receive their full support. “We are asking them not to hold the event in the public interest and in regard to public safety,” said RCMP Const. Peter Thiessen, who also sat in on the meeting. New Year’s Eve is the “worst night of the year for us as a police agency because we are already stretched to the limit,” Thiessen said. Police officers will already be working overtime that night, and continuing serious crime investigations, including this week’s double murder. To then ask for them to police a rave involving more than 3,000 people “would only stretch us thinner.” The City of Richmond is currently processing Roussopoulos’ application to have BridgePoint become a sanctioned rave facility. Only two locations - The Palace and The Riverside Banquet Hall, near River and No. 6 road - are licensed to hold legal raves. The lack of police support isn’t the only obstacle in Roussopoulos’ bid. Members of council may recall that Roussopoulos was connected to a rave that was responsible in large part for the city’s restrictive rave bylaw. In April 2000, ‘near riot’ conditions resulted after a rave was moved at the last minute from the Agrodome in Vancouver to the two sanctioned local facilities. According to police, an estimated 4,000 people showed up for the event at the venues, which combined can only hold 2,200 people. Hundreds of upset ticket holders who didn’t make it into the facilities before they filled up, reportedly hurled water bottles at police and there were arrests. Roussopoulos said that rave wasn’t one of his proudest moments and that it caused him to change the way he does business. At the time his company, undernet.* Services Ltd., was providing the ticketing to the event, while others were responsible for chosing and changing the venue. However Roussopoulos recognized his name was also on the line and said that he now organizes his own raves as a result. Roussopoulos has been told his application will be fast-tracked and that he could appear before council early in December. Should council reject his application, he is considering cutting back the hours of the event so that it would end at 2 a.m. If the event were to shut down at 2 a.m., the City of Richmond’s rave bylaw would not apply. |

i talked to those reporters about a week ago, and reminded them that BRIDGEPOINT WAS USED AS A RAVE VENUE FOR NEW YEARS LAST YEAR!!!!!!!!!!
they refuse to acknowledge that fact. fucking city is as corrupt as the day is long. i checked out the party last year briefly. it was by Pulscity with tickets sold through ticketmaster. among the dj's were sonny and ill-esha, and a bunch of no namers. it went off all night, while the show at riverside (interstellar overdrive2) was forced to be cancelled at the last minute because the city decided not to allow any new years parties. when we spoke to the city and cops about the fact that our party at riverside was off, but the bridgepoint one was still on, they refused to comment (this was before the party, last year). it happened. now they refuse to acknowledge it did. fucking corrupt city. makes me sick. thanks to Bullies with Badges, we can buy and sell our justice. |

buying and selling justice? i don't think you have presented any proof of that. if anywhere, the city of richmond has been the most patient and open with raves than anywhere else. r. |

Excellent read
Thank-you.
I do happen to know Riel personally and if his event is approved I will be giving away free tickets to the party. I always enjoy checking out a new venue and from what I've been told this place has 1,177 parking stalls. That's more than enough parking stalls to facilitate the masses. And honestly i think the police squad is big enough. Downtown should be guarded if anywhere and maybe the CAN/US boarder. Aside from that it's new years for crying out loud.... let us enjoy the holiday. |
