Gender issues and Mixing Ablilities. Nice try.
Quote:
Let me start off by saying: Nobody is perfect!! Some have different fashion approaches *cough*. A good Dj can always admit to having flaws in their sets or CD's. We need to remember: We all have talent, even if you feel like you aren't suffice to play for a crowd, keep practicing - build your confidence and keep trying! There is so much more to a set than beat perfection and it's sad people use the lame excuse regarding the Dj's Gender to justify why they "lack talent" or "mixing skills". Everybody messes up, any set anywhere, Males and Females. I have been playing 4 1/2 years. In this time, I have been personally sabotaged by many Male Dj's in the process, simply because they were jealous that I might threaten open residencies, timeslots and competitions. Needles of mine have been literally bent off before some of my big headlining sets....2 sets of bent stylus' later. Even my new Sony700's were stolen and re-sold by a local DJ in my old town of residence. It's not fair, but you know what, it's fueled my undying passion for this predominantly male sport of "Spinning". The sport and ultimate rush from spinning is what drives us and pushes us to succeed to our personal peak. Through my experiences with trainspotting, throughout many Dj sets all over Canada, I have been brought to this conclusion: In 90% of all sets, the successful Dj's had CONFIDENCE, PERSONALITY and INTERESTING SET DYNAMICS. You have to keep the crowd interested. If I get bored after 10 minutes, you've lost me. I don't care if you have played 20 years or 2 months. What matters is heart and feelings you put out to everyone. If you don't feel it, I don't feel it. Spinning is a performance and a show. It's a combination of so many elements that are only going to get better with practice, practice, practice. I encourage all Males and Females interested in starting/trying/buying into the art of spinning to go ahead and just go for it! Everyone started somewhere. Do you think they just threw Oakie up on stage and signed him with GU/Perfecto for wearing his headphones upside down? Or that Miss Behavin' made it to Ibiza this year, just because she had big boobs? These people worked hard, practiced, played crappy clubs and played over a hundred parties, just to gain exposure. All Dj's work their butts off, no matter what Gender! Some make it big, some don't, that's life. Trust in yourself. You can do it. Thanks for reading, I really appreciate that. :) Women Studies major at UNBC for 3 years - Feel free to add any concerns or comments you have regarding this post. |

so basically boys, to be a good female dj and get booked and get paid money, we just have to take our shirt off and put on some pasties?
makes our job easier. but quite frankly, i think girls like that take away from the talented female djs that bust there asses practicing, and dont get booked due to being female and not being naked. and to the lady that respects the fact that the only reason men are staring at her is because her top is off, dude wheres your head at? maybe im derranged but id rather have a group of mens attention for something im saying rather then my tits showing. |

I really appreciate your feed back.
The comments I was referring to were actually from someone else prior to your post, I grabbed the wrong quote, my apologies :) About Women Studies, I agree with your comments. I stopped the program after 3 years. It started to get rediculous and it seemed the whole class was based upon complaining and re-surfacing historical feelings of oppressions.... which were a little un-necessary and depressing at times. Though, there were parts of the course that really did help me become aware of some of the social barriers for women that still exist today. It was an interesting program, though I agree, I was being forced in my papers and presentations to take a very strong political standpoint that I was not willing to believe in. I think Men are great. Really. I just often notice people (Male and Female), who may be insecure about their own talents and abilities, abusing and manipulating the term "Female Dj". I'm done complaining now :P Take care and see you in a few weeks! |

i do believe there should be a balance between male DJs & female djs @ party. i donno if this is true when female's getting booked by male promoters--->it seems like Appearance seems to be more important than skills. i mean no harm to promoters right here, but feel free to bash at me... oh yea, Can anyone gv me her dj name??? i still wanna vote her #1 DJ in whole world this year....muhahaa |

BTW, she's a horrible DJ. I've heard from numerous sources she has no clue what she's doing. Here's a review. http://www.shejay.net/01_feat_articl...es_alltits.htm Last edited by angst; Jul 12, 04 at 10:09 AM. |
