Where to get Dreads done in Vancouver.

I'm going to get dreads very soon (mid-august). I want to get them done professionaly because I don't know anyone who could do it for me, who has experiance... as dreads are something that supposed to last a long while if built and maintianed properly. So I'm gonna fork over the money to have 3-4 hrs of work done to my hair. Any salons that you know of or can recommend for this procedure to be done there on the mainland? I'm in Nanaimo and gonna come over durring a visit and have it done.

Thanks
Phil

Are you sure you want to do dreads?

My friend had them done, and this kid is pretty dirty. After like three months or so, he just went and had his head shaved. It was gross dude... They do look wicked... But they smell just wow...terrible is an understatement.

Laughs.

I guess that would be true, since its hard to wash it really, all the hair underneath would be hard so yeah it would start to smell quite bad.

Don't you have to build dreads over time?

You can get them done once, if your hair is long enough. It takes awhile for your hair to actually grow into the dreads on its own. You have to wax and mould it ALL THE TIME though...

No need to waste your money and have it done "professionally". I've heard that you just rub your hair for a month or 2 and use dishwashing liquid when you wash it and should have pretty good dreads. I haven't cut my hair in over a year now so I might let it dread but I'm not sure yet. It's tangling up a little already.

I know people who've been able to keep their dreads in over 6 months or more because they keep good care of them... have to make sure to keep them dry... and if anything does get in to them, was it out carefuly then dry your hair out 100%... if moisture gets in there that's what eventuly makes them smell bad. So yeah I'm willing to take the risk, and once it's time to get them out, I'll be willing to. Wax isn't the only way to do it... but one of the many options. Also natural dreads only works well for people with frizzy or wavy hair... mines fine and stright... so I can't do it that way. Going to get it professionaly done because they will beable to do a good job on them and beable to give me proper maintianance techniques, to ensure that I can keep them in there looking and smelling fine for a long time. And Mid-August is the date because I do have a little bit of growing left to be done in the back of my head as that's slightly short... top of the head is ready to go. Still if anyone has location ideas, it'll be much apreciated... thanks to all for replying so far.

Phil

its the fact that it happens at all,and still does. when i see shit like this it really doesnt sit well with me at all because 9 times out of 10 its some stupid white kid that has no knowledge of what dreadlocks mean to people that actually are rastafari, and just see it as some fashion statement that only further negates what the Rastafari people beleive and stand for.

Kind of like Che Guevara t-shirts.

...first the kehfil, next the hijab!!! c'mon.:|

the manifestation of naturalism one of the rastafari beleifs, and maybe a personification of white stereotypes imposed on them as being jungle savages basically when they were hauled away from Africa on slave ships.

^you can look at it that way yes. But quate it to me or you wearing a hijab, pretty sure the meaning of dreads far extend the vague example i was able to provide.

pretty sure theres scripture you could reference about cutting ones hair, also about tattoos and piercing the skin...
