HELP!! Question for Shaw cable internet users
I've heard rumours over the years that they do track usage but am curious to know if anyone has been nailed for overusage or if there are fat plans I could purchase.
Reason I am asking is that I can't get ADSL where I am moving to at the end of this month and if I can't get a high speed pipe out then my ftp music server goes into hibernation. :( Any information would be appreciated. Thanks. Winston |

I got nailed for 'overusage' and it's just because my roommate is download crazy
all it consisted of was a phonecall from some smarmy bitch named Merideth that basically provided me a 20 minute lecture (I could mentally picture her waving her finger at me) on how IT IS BAD TO DOWNLOAD TOO MUCH, even after I established it wasn't me doing that personally. She said 'this is your first warning' (ohh thanks for letting me off easy seeing as how I'm PAYING for the service and I can gladly take my business elsewhere) and that next time they'd suspend my service for a week. |

I was running like 4 game servers from home on shaw and they gave me a nice little call too. I hung up on her after she started with an attitude. I was then called by I guess her manager and I explained why I hung up on her and that if this is how their customer service is and this is a sign of what they think of their clientele I might have ot change service providers for my cable and internet. He was apolagetic and explained how the system is set-up on a network blah blah blah yeah like I dont know how to manipulate that system! Anyways to cut a long story short the simple explanation is that each area is on one network now when you sign up read the paperwork. The older contracts do not state an upload download limit so basically they can go fuck themselves. The new contract does mention limits but the last time I looked it's not specfic so again they are screwed. As far as disconnecting service for a week I'd love ot see them do that to me. Every time my internet goes down over an hour I generally get a 1 month free service. Once it was done for three days and I got 2 months free internet and 1 month free pay per view channels. With internet going YFI and Sat TV they need every customer they got right now!

Doom is on shaw has done multiple multimonth spans of 40 to 60 gigs, -while- being watched for usage. They didn't say a thing. If they do start humping on you about usage, say your system was hijacked/infected by another computer on shaw's network, that usually shuts them right up.

At this very moment, sitting with an uptime on an XP machine of 2 days, i've already receioved 13.6GB and sent 17.4GB I have never received a phone call. I download on average 50-80GB and upload 60-70GB. They have booted me off before, and I went to dsl, DSL is slow and a pain in the ass with their constant down times, so we went back to shaw. Now I have both... :D |

Neoh,
I just got off the phone with Shaw in regards to their Shaw Extreme service. I thought the extra speed would be worth the money (5Gb down/1Gb up) for the ftp. They told me they have a max cap of 50Gb of up/down transfers a month and they boot you for 2 weeks if you abuse that. If I upgrade to a small business account then they relax a bit on this issue. What I am trying to find out is if they really do nail users like this and if I really need to pay and extra $10 then another $10 for an upgraded package and so on. The ftp is a service I provide for free but I don't care to pay crazy surcharges just to keep it running. Also, I only get these crazy usage blips when I go into a 'search' mode and look for tracks like a madman for certain 'clients' :c-tard:, otherwise I think I will be within the allowed 50gb spec. Thoughts? |

That sucks! I know there is some services in Lynn Valley but not many. It's basically around the lynn Valley mall area only for a few blocks. The new apartments on 29th have it forsure. Shaw good though I've got no complaints really!

I have a residential high speed account, I get a solid 400-700kb/down most of the time. It really all depends on the area Quote:

Shaw is very very bitchy about this matter as I have went over their limits several of times, and didnt care. They eventually decided not to offer me any business anymore, so now im stuck on slow as hell ADSL, and it sucks, im in a shitty area so I get extremely slow speeds, man I miss Shaw.
But oh well brigh tside, its unlimited. Shaw is crazy when it comes to bandwidth, and 50gb is not a lot when im downloading vcds/dvdrs/mp3 sets all the time. So goodluck with Shaw. |

Winston they most definitely cut people off for over-usage. My buddy works for Shaw and his job is exactly that. He calls people, warns them once, maybe twice (doubtful), and then cuts them off. If you get on their list they'll be sure to check back on your file and if you ignore warnings your interent services will be cut.
ADSL isn't tracked but if you can't get ADSL where you're moving to then I guess you're pooched. |
