What is with the USA basketball team

In Athens this years USA Olympic Basketball team seems less like a dream team and more like a screan team (unless you hate the american team) lit's not like they droped games to the serbs or any of the other countries with NBA stars they lost to counties who have some emerging talent but nothing that should have taken down even the USA's second stringers so ask the sports wizzes of FNK, what the hell?

it's easy to teach a bunch of tall monkeys to play zone on a team that can't shoot from the outside.

Just because the USA has some of the best players in the world on their squad doesn't mean they know how to play as a team.

read what some sports writers are saying...

- its not that USA is getting worse... its that international teams are catching up, so gotta give credit to them as well. its inevitable that USA will finally lose some day.

- USA needs more time to get to know each other as a team... 10 days of practice wont cut it, whereas the intl. teams have been playing together for years.

- the international style of basketball is totally different than NBA style... i.e. different rules, refs, even court dimensions... all the little things add up to change the style of the game. its hard to expect the american players to adjust flawlessly to this new style after playing a full 82-game season of NBA games.

- they need more shooters... and more role-players, not just 12 individuals who are used to being the number one options on their teams.

shiet... i could get into a whole long discussion bout this... but ive done too much thinking bout this already

oh ya... think about what it feels like to be a dream team player. everyone hates you in the arena cuz ur american... they almost want to kill u... literally. then everyone at home in the US is saying you suck... you're a disgrace to the country. sheesh... its a lose-lose situation. if u dont win gold... u suck. if u do win gold... everyone still says, "awwwww... whatever... u had to try so hard! u got beat by these other countries anyway! ur not as good as the other dream teams! u barely won gold... u got lucky! btw, can i have ur autograph mr iverson??"

ur trying to justity how pathetic the dream team is by using quotes that sports writers have written. I think some of that stuff might have to do with it, but i think more than anything its that the team is young, and not quite there as a team.

compared to that of a true dream team ala jordans etc.. that team new had to play as a t eam, was seasoned and completely had the heart to do anything

dude... dont even say that this team is pathetic until they are officially eliminated. as for ur comment about the team being young and not being cohesive... well... the age factor cant be helped. so what if they're young? lebron aint even legal drinking age in the states, and he's kickin butt. and how do u expect a "team" to be cohesive with only a few days of practice? fuck... take the worst team in the NBA after they've played together all season, and they would rock any of these international teams.

and to even compare them to the original dream team is dumb. the original dream team was the one that planted the seed for nba calibre basketball around the world. before them... majority of international players could only dream of playing against NBA players. when they finally got to go up against jordan, magic, isiah... they were simply awestruck (and of course got their butts kicked). this current dream team aint even a real dream team... its more like a C or D list dream team. how many of these guys were even all-stars this year? but if u put together ur A-list dream team of today (like kobe, shaq, garnett) i think they would kick the 1992 barcelona team's ass.

"oh u just quoted what those sports writers said so u must think what they said is true"....... gee im just responding to the original question. and those points ARE true.

^ hahaha

i think i hit something. Did i upset you by picking on YOUR DREAM TEAM, cause thats what I get outta this whole thing. I said their pathetic not based on their success or lack of at the games, i said it cause i don't like the players much. Nopt because of their playing abilty, cause obviously they can play.

I just don't like them much as people and stuff. I.E iverson i don't li ke him as a captain for one

I was watching the USA's last game and the comintators made a good point that the dream team concept has pushed international basketball to the point where other countries have competitive programs and this coupled with the poor showing at the world champioships could lead to a new order in american basketball

to kenji: hmmm what did u hit there? i dont see it... fill me in. how convenient of u say that ur picking on the players' characters rather than their playing ability... in that case u shoulda made that more clear from the beginning. i assumed we were discussing playing ability... seeing how this thread implies "what is up" with the dream team's playing ability.

but yah man... i dont think the team's playing ability is pathetic... but if ur talkin bout their character... well thats a different story. there's so much that goes on behind closed doors in their practices, huddles, locker room, etc, that there's no way to be conclusive as to how much these guys want the gold medal. btw, anyone that knows me knows that im a fan of the whole game of basketball, not just any particular team. so if u think this is MY DREAM TEAM... haha... no man, im all about watching good players and teams doin their thang.... and the US aint doin what they're capable of... thas all
