it's stands for 'rhesus'. it's important to know to prevent agglutination reactions in blood transfusions and erythroblastis fetalis (a situation that can seriously harm a fetus if the mother is rh- and her second baby is rh+).
as for me, I'm surprised to know the number of people who don't know their blood types! I've known my blood type all my life. it's O+. hence those blood services are ALWAYS fucking calling me!
