Does your computer have a name?
Taken a bit from Rob Peppertree's computer violence post...
UNIX geeks have known for years that computers are more than the sum of their parts - something happens when you build a machine, and if you've spent enough time staring at the screen at 5 in the morning, eventually you realize that something inside is staring back at you... All servers have names. Sure, sometimes they're stuff like "mailserver" or "NTPDC1", but often they get really funky names - and when you have a lot of servers, that's when you get to have a "naming convention", in which every name relates to the others. Some naming conventions in networks I've worked in include:
So anyway - how many of you have named your computers? What is your computer's name? |

at work my personal boxes are 'dunks' 'vandal' 'terminator' all after shoes.
laptop is 'ohsnap'. home is 'pinkshirt'. our naming scheme here has a theme that changes focus every time someone new starts making servers. blame thing. original servers done by one guy were all named after beer(molson, labatts). internal engineering is all fine wine grapes (pugnet, muscat). the other internals are named after jiggy drinks (hennessey, alize). very fitting how the names match the quality. |

unless its a server i dont really associate it with a name though. my laptop, my work box and my home boxes are extensions of myself and cant be personified. anything that does what i tell it without me being there can be thought of as a seperate being.

home PC = Tiesto
home Laptop = piccoto At my work we used to have the servers named after inventors ( Franklin,Edison,Davinci, etc ). But now we just have boring VAN-FS1,VAN-FS2,etc:( ( no fun ) If I was going to set up a network with named servers i'd name them after Simpsons characters:y: |

Well I name my net works by color. I've used green, and red before, But at home I ended up using Blue.
