R.I.P. Sarah Gillette
BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. - A 14-year-old girl was arrested on one count of vehicular homicide and at least four counts of vehicular assault after the Ford Explorer driven by the teen slammed into a tree on Bainbridge Island, killing 16-year-old Sarah Gillette.
J.K. Spencer rushed to the scene of the accident, which occurred at about 2 a.m. Monday. He was shocked by what he saw.
""I saw quite a bit of blood," he said Spencer. "It was just scary to come out and see that my friends were lying here, trying to hang onto their lives."
Eight of Spencer's classmates were stuck inside the mangled Explorer.
According to friends, the teenagers snuck out of their homes. One of them stole their parents' car and they all were taking turns behind the wheel.
"I don't know who was driving, they just switched with the 14-year-old when she lost control and went over," said Carol Burford.
The Explorer slid nearly 270 feet. Gillette, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Four 16-year-old boys were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Three were in critical condition.
Three teens - a girl, a boy and the female driver - were treated at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton and released.
Police believe all eight were about to start classes at Bainbridge High School in two weeks.
"It is a time of transition at this school and will be, I'm sure, a difficult time for all of us," said Bainbridge High School Principal, Brent Peterson.
Peterson said administrators are preparing for the emotional impact of the crash.
Spencer said he's still in shock, and is sure his classmates will be too, when they hear the news about the crash.
"I think people are going to be mourning, because this is a tragedy," he said.
Police believe the eight teens were on a joyride and had sped along Tolo Road at least one other time early Monday morning.
J.K. Spencer told KING 5 News that one of the passengers in the car said the car was traveling 80-90 mph at the time of the crash. The speed limit on the road is 30 mph.
Police said alcohol was not involved in the crash and no one was under the influence of alcohol.
The Bainbridge Island School District issued a press release Monday afternoon, stating that as students start the registration process this week, rooms will be open to students who want to gather and share their feelings, obtain more information, or access counselors and adults who will be available
