Question about studio monitors for people that spin
I have a chance to pick up a pair of Alesis M1 active powered monitors.
Would I be better off with these monitors or with a pair of Mission/Energy speakers run off my Denon amplifier for practising? Thanks in advance for any info. |

The Alesis ones will give you a much flatter frequency response than the Mission/Energy ones.
That being said, they won't sound as *good*. :) It's a paradox. Studio monitor speakers aren't meant to sound good, they're meant to sound *accurate*. For a DJ, your audio sources are already mixed and mastered professionally, so you don't have to worry about it - f'rinstance, mixing your own music, if you mixed on speakers that have "really good bass", when you went to listen to your music on a system *without* good bass response, your bass would just disappear, or if you listened on a set with even *more* bass, your music would be way too bassy. Professionals use systems with flat response curves (and use them enough to *really* know the sound of the speakers) so that on a system with really good bass, their music will have really good bass. If you're getting a great deal on the monitors, I say go for them, 'cause you can always know they're good speakers - you can use them on your computer if/when you start producing. If you're thinking that on the Alesis monitors your records will sound crisper and cleaner - well, they probably will, but you'll also very likely lose a lot of your low end, 'cause the Alesis monitors are designed to be used with a subwoofer. |
