question about duty/shipping
so I won something on ebay that cost $7.95 US and will cost $5 to ship. I do want to ship it to a friend as a gift, but I don't know if something of this cost will mean that my friend (in Calgary) will have to pay duty on it once they get it?
Can anyone help me out here? I've had experiences where I've had to pay more in duty than I actually paid for the product sometimes. |

I think the duty should be minimal to none on something that costs less than 10 bucks. If you're personally bringing stuff across the border (like, when you go on a trip to the states) I seem to recall there being a personal limit of something like $300.
Then again, I could be totally full of shit too. |

you could ship it to yourself first and pay any of the cutoms fee's and then send it to your friend... and you can personally get your money back through customs by sending the attachment form.. you won't always get charged by customs though.. they only charge you if they need to open it (even though it's really none of their business).. i order records from the uk and the us all the time.. i only get charged some of the time.. although recently it's been every time :(

Duty is a pro-rated percentage charge (based on the goods you are importing, the country where the goods were made, and the country from which you are importing them) which is incurred by Canada Customs. Basically it is to offset the really cheap prices of things that come from other countries.
For example, if a watch is sold for $1 in Taiwan and it comes over here with an invoice showing that amount (plus some shipping mark-up, etc.) then the importer here turns around and sells it for $3 to a Canadian that is not fair to a Canadian watch manufacturer to whom it might cost $3 just to manufacture that watch! So the Canadian manufacturer could not compete very well. Canada customs tries to balance out (very rudimentarily) these inequalities by imposing duty. Of course, the system is not perfect and there are also lots of exceptions. But that's the gist of it. I used to work at the airport for a custom brokerage firm. If you wanna know the specific rate the duty will be give any of the Custom Brokers at the airport a call and they should help you out no charge cuz they're nice. They just look it up in the computer. But yes the duty on something that cheap should be minimal. Last edited by SquiLa; Sep 14, 04 at 05:11 AM. |

I wasn't Canada Customs, I worked for a custom brokerage (middle man basically) firm who acts on their behalf. Don't shoot the messenger!
And they are lowering and slowly phasing out duty imposed from many countries (though specially selected ones) with the WTO agreement. But yea, everything can be called bullshit from some point of view. It all has to do with the delicate game of world economics (meh took that too). Quote:
