Should they call me by my LAST or FIRST name at school???
Ive just started working as a special education teacher assistant. Its cool cus im the more cool one compared to the teachers... but what im trying to decide is if I should get them to call me by my last or first name? Its kinda cool being call miss.... and kinda makes my job more proffesional, but then I feel the kids would be more relaxed and cool with me if they call me by my first?
BTW both names are hard for the kids and staff to pick up at first lol |

Well, when I was in school, once I got to know the teachers, I would usually just end up calling them by last name only. ex. "Hey, Tonsaker, are we playing hockey today?"
It all depended on the teacher, if they were one of the cooler ones, like yourself, then they would be fine with it. It just made it feel like you had a special connection with them that way. |

Rhia, use your last name.
The other teachers won't approve if you have students calling you by your first name, ESPECIALLY in elementary school. As for the name tag, that's a great idea. My mom used to work in a Kindergarten class, and the teacher's name was Miss Starbird. She drew a picture of a star and a bird (duh!) and it made it 100x easier for the kiddies to remember! Forget about the "wishing well" part...they won't get it. Just write WELL, then draw *bee* and *heart*. They'll get it! EDIT: Or, you could just have them call you "Miss. W" |

I would definitely have to recommend that they call you Ms.insertlastname here.
I once TA'd a gr.3-4 class and had them call me by my first name. I found that, although they obviously felt more buddy-buddy with me because of it, they didn't quite show the respect and sense of seriousness that they did with other teachers or their assistants. After that year ended, I had students call me by my last name, and I did notice a bit of difference. Since we're quite young compared to the experienced/elder teachers, the 'Ms' at the beginning of the name just adds a bit of authority. Similarly, my little sister (who is only 16) has been teaching Tae Kwon Do for a couple years and has noticed the same thing. Since students call her Miss, no one has ever challenged her about her youth or even asked her how old she is (lots of them just assume she is in her mid-20s). My ten cents! *Jen* |

my auntie is mentally handicapped and i know that she called all of her teachers by their first names just because it was easier for her to say the one name rather than the miss\mrs\mr in front of another. talk it over with the staff youre working with. i think it depends on the environment the already present staff have created.
personally i would try to go by my first name. in art one year i had a student teacher and we called her by her first name, but it was a pretty relaxed art class - we were self directed. she still had plenty of authority and respect, but more so in that "we really like you as a teacher so as a class we are not going to cause you any trouble" kind of way. |
