I hijacked someone's wireless net connection!

I got a wireless card in my computer and searched around and found someone nearby has an UNSECURED wireless modem. So I connected.

WOOHOO! free highspeed websurfing!

In some neighbourhoods you can pick up a half dozen other wireless networks.

There's 4 computers in my house. All are hardwired except mine

Instead of having some 100 foot cable going around my house
I got myself a wireless card and just connect to the neigbors signal
I've been doing it for months now

It's cool and all but sometimes my comp loses the connection for a lil while

My neighbor is always outside sitting with his laptop on his lap. he told me he is pickin my signals though. its fine cuz he doesn't dl or anything. checks his email and fucks off.

So whats wrong with using other peoples signal
Does it harm them in anyway? I download a lot

I'm only using the signal for conveinance cause my house is huge and to wire it up would take a lot of ugly cable through the house

This unsecured network I connected to has been there for a few months but I was unable to connect before - I installed XP Service Pack 2 and now I can get in.

I should drive around and try to locate the network. Signal is weak but it must be within a few hundred feet.

There are "wardrive" lists that show locations of unsecured Wi-Fi access points.

yea i saw a show on tv about people going around town picking peoples signals with their labtop. they said when u hook up ur internet u have the otion to lock ur signal but by default it isn't locked and 9 out of 10 people dont lock it so basiclly u can go around anywhere and pick up a signal for sure. well so they say. im no computer expert so i dont know shit
