Glowsticks. Period.

Ok - so lets discuss this because Im really confused.

What is everybody's problem with glowsticks? Why does it bother soooo many people if I go out and waste 5 dollars on 5 cheap things that glow colors and trip me out when Im wasting my money on drugs too, in an essence its alll a waste. but its fun to some.

Ive had quite a few people mention the glowstick trend to me and I simply dont understand why glowsticks impact soo many peoples and effect so many opinions.

So - maybe I can understand- what is up with the glowstick hatred?

i think it's just the fact that most people look like such idiots waving them around.

i think on a large scale they add to the party. i mean, i remember standing on the balcony at plaza and looking over this sea of people and glowing things, it was pretty damn cool.

however, if you just focus on one person, they look like a tool.

Also its a general assuption that anyone with glowsticks tend to be high on e alot of the time. Bittter/Jaded/Sober ravers don't usually like to associate with high ravers.

I don't mind glowsticks that much, but when it comes to lightshows OH GOD is all I gotta say.

i think you just answered your own question.

i think people hate glowsticks because most people who have them are all high and annoying and pushing them into others peoples faces.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD TRY SOMETHING NEW!

Glowsticks were old and done 5 years ago.

^^ That is what people's problems are with them. I dunno. Most people just kinda put them between their fingers and wave them rather unenthusiastically.... doesn't even look cool at all... just looks like someone who heard they were supposed to have glowsticks at a rave and so they have them.

We all used to play with them. I still like having them at raves for a couple reasons... the biggest being that they're excellent for mid-night rifling through a bag at an outdoor party with shitty lighting. Also good for tagging your bag and/or your friends.... But be a bit more innovative than just glowsticks....

Blinking collars were a decent way at one party to track down one of my friends. The idea of tagging friends came up to me when a computer-geeky friend and I started discussing putting tags on our friends so we could find them... The idea we had was PDAs that can talk to each other using WiFi.... We figured you could also bounce off your friends' PDAs with simple light signals to calculate distance between PDAs, use the network of them to synch up and that way you could triangulate position and distance of your friends.... Just keep a compass with you and you're on your way. Probably best to give all your friends a "fuck off, I'm having sex in the bush/tent/wherever with some high chick" button or something.

I used to be all Just Say No To Glowsticks, still am from time to time. Just because.... y'know... they're really not all that.

I'm all for glowsticks at outdoor parties. But mostly because they light up my staff. *fond memories of Shambhala*
And they make a good light source to get things with, or go wandering off to dark places.

I don't know why I don't like them.. but I've never liked them since I was lttle.. like when you were 6 years old and all those kids would be like 'I want one'... my grandma would always offer to buy me one.. but I'd always much rather get a balloon.
Thanx you very much.

And anything that blinks has always annoyed me.. especially strobe lights.

I dunno.. I guess i'm just off that way.

I don't understand light shows what so ever. High or not it's just redundant.

A lot of people use glow sticks just to have something in their hands, I find it easier to dance if I have something in my hands, usually a water bottle or fuck, a glow stick.

It's an accessory, really. I mean, rave's are stereotyped, glow sticks are just a part of that entire culture, it's cultural - it goes with the specific environment.

And are primary used by newbies.

my first rave was apex..and the glowsticks were fun..and ive been to a few parties since and they have still been fun. but then i went to sob sober and saw a bunch of people bouncing around with their binkies and such and..well i realized just how ridiculous I must look. I think the STICKS are fun for trance because its fun to flail.. but other than that they've lost their flare for me. and i do agree with the blinking thing---gives my eyes an eyeache

i think the answer to the 'noob' question is actually in your own post.

let's think about all the people that are new to raves...they're new to the music (most of the time), the people, the drugs (most of the time) and the 'culture' that we have going. (i'm going with majority here)

now all they know of our 'culture' is the publicized version of it. the filmed and documented version that is spewed out through the media, and that version is the high kids with the crazy coloured clothings and glow sticks.

i think that's why most newbs use the glowsticks...they're just trying to fit into a culture they don't yet understand, until they find their own footing. also explains why a lot of noobs over-do the drugs in the first few months.

i'm not saying that's why EVERYONE uses glowsticks...but i do believe that more 'new' people use them than older. and that what i said is probably the reason.
