"Once Upon A Time, I Was a Monster" - Jaunuary 8th-30th Misanthropy Gallery
i'm sure there's a handful of people on this board that enjoy art.
On January 8th-30th, at Misanthropy Gallery (downtown Vancouver), myself and another toronto-based photographer are having an art show. Some of our newest works are going to be displayed in large format (5 feet by 4 feet). Both Talia Shipman and I have similar styles but she takes a more of a gender/sociological direction with her fashion work and i take more of a surreal/commercial direction with my fashion work. Saturday January 8th is the opening of our show. It's totally free to get in, cheap drinks will be sold at the gallery. if you like art, photography, live trip hop/downtempo, or if you're looking to have a good time, check out Misanthropy. www.misanthropygallery.com keep your eyes out for the covers of the georgia straight and terminal city in december for more info on our show. -s. Congratulations Sammy, I'm jealous and proud of you all at the same time!
Is that second picture by the other artist in the show? I love love loooove the colours and the message it sends. It's alot like the type of stuff I love doing, and would do if I was a photographer. Is she local (to us) or is she stationed in TO as well? By the way, Theres no waay I'm missing this show. |

the dates have now been extended
January 8th-30th jenna, the photo done on the back of the flyer is indeed by the other photographer, Talia Shipman. A lot of her stuff is reminiscent of the work by David LaChapelle (vibrant colours, manneristic). -s. |

thanks for the support guys!
The name of the show quite simply refers to the subject matter of the peices on display. Essentially, although both my work and Talia Shipman's addresses different aesthetics, we realized that in both bodies of work, there was this collective notion of the modern female striving for the perfect "ideal". In both our respective works, this idea of the unattainable status of perfection is contorted and ,ultimatly, is criticized upon by means of irony and satire. Being both up and coming fashion photographers/stylists in the industry, we both decided to take a creative tangent towards producing a manneristic social commentary on the fashion world. In a sense, we're poking fun at ourselves and our chosen creative direction; not only is it a satire of current fashion trends and body ideals, but it's also a satire on our own work. With that said, we came up with the title of the show after realizing this common thread that held our respective bodies of work together as a whole. Every peice of the show illustrates a female striving to look like her OWN ideal of perfection at any expense. The idea of this exaggerated reality plays into the fairy-tale connotation of "once upon a time..." and "...i was a monster" makes reference to what these females have become in the photos: contorted human figures in surreal environments that are everything BUT perfect. In my work, you'll see exaggerated body proportional ratios of limbs and waists and heads of the models. In Talia Shipman's work you'll see oddities in everyday situations that women put themselves in. -s. |
