The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time
I'm reading this great novel right now by Mark Haddon, and it's v.interesting! It's told from the perspective of a 15 year old boy with Autism (whom I believe is a fictitious character, although the author worked with many people who have autism when he was younger). It's a v.easy read, and an eye opener to how it *might* be to like to live with autism. I've been working with children who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) for the last 7 years and find it really neat to relate to the quirkiness of this young gentlemen's story: He's trying to solve the mysterious death of the neighbour's dog, but his tale is filled with all kinds of tangents about his life and the way he thinks about it. Anyways, just putting that out there, for Rhia, Maria, any other para-educators/educators, and anyone else who might enjoy a left-of-the- middle type read :)

Yes! Thinking in Pictures is on my list of must-reads, and so are her other books. I have a grand list of authors who have autism themelves or are related to a person who has autism. I will share :) Also, books by Torey Hayden are stories often based not so loosely on her time as a teacher working closely with children with adverse needs - I've read a couple, such as One Child, and maybe have read what I think was the sequel A Tiger's Child- Good stuff! Hard to find in a library tho...

For Rhia (and others)
Here's few Authors and titles I have scibbled down. Each author will get you more titles:
Temple Grandin (has autism) Charles Hart (his son has autism) - Without Reason Catherine Maurice - Let Me Hear Your Voice Donna Williams (has autism) Torey Hayden (writes about her time as a teacher working with children who have special needs) And for the ASL geek in you, I hear Children of a Lesser God is a good one about people of the Deaf community. My sign Teacher recommended it anyways... I think I have that right. Hehe. |

My bias is that I'm really intrigued by the way people with ASD think... Because I have worked with many individuals over the years, and am currently working with a 6 year old girl at an elementary school, and working one-to-one with a 12 year old girl I have supported for the last 7 years. |
