I didn't intend them to be "hip". I intended them to be what I'd know when I saw them. The misspellings and use of z is because of personal language reasons. There's a system to it. |

http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/W/warez.html The thing that always irks me about ESR is that he never seems to admit that a hacker can be a cracker and vice-versa. The terms may be mutually exclusive (at least in my opinion) but the people aren't necessarily. |

ESR's just an open-sores fanatic. It's got its ups and downs like anything else. Zealotry is the only real problem, and the open-source community needs to address that issue more than anything else. |

I just finished up some much over do cleaning:
10GB OS & Programs Partition 100GB File Storage Partition -Movies -TV Shows -Applications -Game Installs -Current Downloads -Large Documents Folder -Website Backups 80GB Music Drive -Randomness, I archive my MP3s to DVDRs when they loose novelty |

I got my shit down to such a science it feels like I'm opening a port to the MI6 each time I log in.
File partition for my warez is all individually segregated to audio apps, system apps, net tweaks and protocol clients, game images and so on, all with individual folders and unarchived for the smaller programs. Sounds are seperated by sample, unsorted downloaded tunes, and then by folders of full albums and fav artists, audio books, lectures, etc. My pics and written documents are retardedly well organized. Movies and series again ready to become a server if I really wanted to. Don't even get me started on my other partitions or I could be here for a while. Plus I am themed up on the alienware skin and got some bitchin docks to boot (clock and mac taskbar, thank you objectdock), using GANT icons. My puter and I get along swell, thank god I have a girlfriend. |

Sadly, more often than not, if I list what I think the advantages are of linux over Windows, everybody automatically thinks I'm a zealot. Especially the Windows zealots. It's not that I'm a zealot. I honestly have reasons that I prefer linux over Windows. And I figure why bother with something that's just going to piss me off in the end? All zealots are are people living in their parents' basements with nothing to do but start holy wars. Most people serious about software and software development don't let it get in their way. And here's a hint.... Zealots exist on every bloody side of the coin. Windows zealots can be every bit as stubborn and annoying as Linux/Mac/whatever zealots. I use Linux because it does everything I want it to, and does it more efficiently than Windows does. Yeah. Zealotry doesn't need to be addressed at all. It's the fact that it is addressed that the problem is. Zealotry wouldn't be such a problem if people just fucking ignored it already. |

There's a reason I keep my stuff stupidly organized.... Mainly, multitasking. I like, when using my computer, to be able to do multiple things.... For this reason I really like Firefox. It combined with a 19" Flatscreen leads to a rather superb commanding use of edge-space.
Check out my screenshot here This is just one of my 4 Virtual Desktops I have kicking around. Mainly, the browsing/working space one (#4). Observe the following tools at my disposal: - Google search tab on the top right. Pull down menu I haven't been able to master yet... I wanted to get the IMDB plugin for it, but so far the only option I have been able to pull up that I use other than Google has been dictionary.com - Bookmarks organized into happy little compartments. Shiny Objects (there's a lot in there), Education (mainly links to MIT's OpenCourseWare), Linux Stuffs (apt-rpm repositories, a couple programs I like to keep my eye on, ie WINE, Firefox, Fedora Core in general), Torrentz (Torrent sites), Forums (Anywhere I regularily post at), blogs (mainly news sites, a couple personal ones), Wikis (Databases and lookup devices... mainly used for reference) and Accounts (g-mail, telus mail, paypal, etc.) - Tabbed browsing. Allows to look up many things, in case someone MSN's you or ICQ's you or whatever.... send you a new link? Open up a new tab, throw it in there.... huzzah! - Move down to the bottom, first you'll find a (closeable) search bar. So much nicer than the annoying popup in the middle of the screen that seems to manage to block whatever the fuck it is you're looking fore. - On the bottom right of firefox, I got a plugin that can remotely run Rhythmbox functions. Also tells me what's playing. Don't need to hop back to the media window (Virtual Desktop #3) in order to find out what's playing, how long left to it, etc. Also has volume control (further volume control on menu bar) The rest I have configured pretty similar to Windows except that I've replaced the systray with applets. Launchers on the left (in order): GNOME menu (the footprint... same as a start menu), Lock screen/launch screensaver, GnomeICU, GAIM, Gedit (tabbed notepad), Evolution (haven't touched pop3 mail quite yet on Fedora Core 3.... Gmail is just so... pretty....), Firefox, Rhythmbox (MP3 Player, like iTunes), commandline screen.... next is taskbar. After taskbar, Volume control, switch-to applet, commandline tool (run commandline programs from that long white box in the bottom right), Virtual Desktop switcher, and finally date/time (24-hour format, ntp synchronized). Like I said. Stupidly organized. Takes a while to learn all the different tricks I'm working from, but seriously, I'm able to make it so that I can do all kinds of different things (usually along the lines of media sharing) while wasting away time on FNK. |

I suppose it was more in response to my own personal dislike of zealotry. If there was some way to wave a magic wand and have them disappear, the open source community would be much nicer, IMO. That's what I meant by address: see if there's some easy way to be rid of them all. There are some good steps forward as of late. KDE and GNOME are working together now, varying versions of vi have various levels of feature-completeness approaching some of that of EMACS, and so on. The problem with Linux users tends to be that they think that their solution is superior to Windows without even a second's doubt. Often they refuse to acknowledge that there are areas in which the Win32 platform is superior. Everything has its pros and cons. Probably the best way to get around being labelled as a zealot is to present one or two things you'd improve about your configuration if you could. Yeah, zealots exist everywhere in the software world, and they exist all over elsewhere too. Analog/digital zealots in electronic music production. Ford/chevy/dodge zealots, etc. If they'd all just realize that their object of lust has flaws, the world would be a much happier place. |
