Digital Cameras
I'm looking into getting a new digital camera to replace the one I had stolen recently.
I'm undecided between the Canon A75 and A85... The 85 is virtually the same as the 75, but has 4 instead of 3.2 megapixels, and the price difference between the two is enough to make me seriously consider going for the 75. Anyone ever used either of these cameras? Anyone know if the difference in resolution from 3.2 - 4 megapixels is significant enough that I should go for the higher model? Any other camera suggestions in the $3-400 range? Thx in advance. |

Good call. Just make sure you know a bit about the models before you go in there on boxing day. I used to work at A&B sound, and the lesson I took home from being on that side of the counter is never, ever, ever, trust salesmen. I've been doing consumer report browsing all morning. |

I have the a75... i've been really satisifed with it. It was actually stolen from me, and i opted to replace it with the exact same model. The video quality (including sound) is really good. Its got tons of features that I haven't even used yet. The 3x optical zoom is about standard these days, but I'm looking at buying an additional zoom lens for which this camera is ready. The image quality has been really great, even in print. I've printed (had developed at london drugs) pictures up to 8x10 with great results. It has been really durable, nice menu system, easy to use when you are first learning about it, and offers a few more advanced features once you get to know it.
I would really reccomend it for an midrange camera. Especially since the price has come down quite a lot in the last 8 months. I would highly reccomend getting rechargable batteries as well, perhaps factor that into your decision between the 75 & the 85. I got the panasonic rechargables /w qucik-charger at future shop for about fifty bucks, and they last at least 5 times longer than a regular set of duracells or energizers. |

If you are choosing between 2 camera's, don't make your decision based on megapixels, more on the quality of the camera. I have a Canon S400. I LOVE it :) A really good website .... www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html |

im in same boat...... a85 is 40$ more and has a bit more megapixel i was told that if u use pictures that are any bigger than 8x10 get the 4 because 3.2 will start to lose clarity....... but 8x10 is really quite a large picture, but if u got photoshop on your computer 3.2 is alll u need because photoshop is almost a godsent program.......
personally i am looking at the cannon sd-200 because it's size and how versitale it can be.... it can fit in any jean pocket or anything can be taken anywhere, and the a75 what turned me away was it's batteries, u dont want AA bateries because they suck hard. u gotta constantly change them it costs alota money and once u pay the price to get the rechargeable aa's with a charger u get almost the same price as the newer model smaller more compact sd series cannon..... and the sd has a bigger screen, smaller, more compact camera... the only thing the A series has over the SD is that it has panoramic view and u can control your shutter speed..... but most of us wont even touch those things. |

ff- I've worked at camera stores for 5 years now (Japan Camera, and for the past 3 years, Blacks), so I have definitely seen and tried out my fair share of digital cameras. The Canon A-series has been one of the most popular camera lines ever released, and the main advantage with these cameras in their ability to perform manual functions (such as setting the shutter speed and apertures). If you want to look at other cameras similar to these, I would suggest the Fuji Finepix E510 or E550 (if you have the money). Both are pretty good. Also, take a look at the Olympus Stylus series, if the manual functions aren't as important to you. I love Olympus (I have 2 Olympus cameras), because their optics are amazing. If you need anymore info, come see me at Blacks in Lougheed Town Centre. Too much to type, not enough time. ;) *Jen* |

Its like 60 extra bucks for the A85 though, plus add on costs for rechargable bateries and a better memory card... =P Plus, it turns out that the A75 has video with sound and the 85 has no sound. Wierd. |

Actually, I'm quite positive that all of the A-series have sound, because all of them have microphones and speakers, as well as they all come with audio-out ports.
Between the two, I'd still go for the higher megapixels if you have the money. But also look at the Fuji E510 too, because it's a 5mp camera, manual/auto, 3x optical, for approx. $399. At first I was weary about recommending Fuji cameras, but after trying one out for a while and buying one for my dad, I'm sold. *Jen* |

http://www.digitalfotoclub.com/sc/di...ubid=706&s2id= (scroll to the bottom where the A85 is. It says no.) Anyway, I'm a bit wary of the finepix cameras. I've found the colours tend to trend a bit too far into the green hues. |

Fuji has always been like that, and I've always used Fuji film, so maybe that's why I like it so much. I take a lot of outdoor photography, so that might explain it.
I'm positive, now that I think about it. I sold a few yesterday, and I remember checking for a microphone. Why would there be a microphone and a speaker in the back, and no sound?! *Jen* |

most point and shoot digi cams these days are about the same, IMOO. megapixel count doesn't really matter. it's just another way for manufacturers to make you think that bigger is better. DPI, size of the sensor and the quality of the camera itself make a good digi cam. Oh, and the quality of the glass the pic is taken through. |

Yeah dude, they rock. I take so many pictures, my shooting has definitely improved since I got my first one. Lots of good pictures of stencils too! I'll let you know what I find out. So far, those 2 are my main choices based on how much you can manipulate the settings and the reviews I've read on the net. You can get the A85 for $339 at Costco right now, and the A75 at Futureshop for $279. |
