ghost town
The strained silence of evening
herds me toward a gentle lane I can see dimly lit in the soft glow of reflection I look up and see it is clearly named Memory and is long and bumpy. It is a rough road and not in very good repair for it seems that no one likes to come here much. I scratch my chin as I walk slowly up the road the soft beating wings of deafness my only company. I stop and peer into a pane of glass, captured for a moment by the image there. It is nothing, fading, empty. The glass is dark now and I wonder why I stopped there, at that one moment. What spurred me to give into those shadows and ponder at their meaning. Shrugging, I move on to a playground. I can hear laughter. Ah the sounds of children at play, it almost warms my heart to hear them shout and run and laugh It almost drowns out the screaming engines of my mind that are now bearing down upon me to whisk me away into that other place where the rules just don't apply. My mind pulls up and I see the driver, a chap I don't particularly care for sitting behind the wheel. He offers me a ride, but I politely decline saying that, today I would rather take a leisurely stroll. He seems offended by my tone, and frankly I don't care. I let him and my mind race off into the distance leaving me, myself and I to stand on the corner of Memory and Nowhere. Me turns to Myself and says that he is glad that I didn't get into the car as we never go anywhere good with the Mind anyway. I look farther down the block to the junction of Knowledge and Memory I grin. There I see the lights of new houses and a thriving community. I can even see the small subdivision of Wisdom coming together but not quite yet complete. I stroll a bit farther down Memory Lane till there is nothing left but it and the decrepit houses I left far behind. I peer through broken glass and burned out shells and search for some glimmer or scrap of glitter. But, as I have tread these steps a thousand times, I know there is nothing here, I found it all long ago and put it on my shelf as a keep sake. Oh My! Look at the time, I really have to go now. |
