Chivas has a decent 18 year I think it is.

If you REALLY like the person...get them JW Blue label.

As for Vodka, Belvedere, Chopin or Grey Goose would make me happy.
Vodka always makes me happy.

If you want something fun and neat...Ive seen these gift boxes (i'll admitt they are kinda cheese but i'd still like receiving one) where there is two slots for two bottles. ie. a bottle of vod and say...sour puss apple. Voila...Sour apple martinis in a box. The have them at Chapters I think. The close up like a lunch kit and have a latch.

Good wine suggestions, but if you have the time and money to invest, make your own wine sometime...

There are tons of places that'll make a 30 bottle batch from $80 - $150 dollars, depending on the quality, waiting time and type. It's a good initial investment and something personal that you can give to people.

Only schtick is that it takes some time to mature... But it'll cost only $4-10 dollars a bottle.

Very simple rule....U get what u pay for...Good scotch comes singlemalt and pretty much any glenlivet or glenfiddich single will suffice superbly

As for red wine....Le vin rouge c'est magnifique. Je prefere produit du france !

wine - get some good australian shirazes. I love yellow tail and eagle hawk shiraz. Ermmmm.... Scotch.. my dad loves chivas regal. I love chivas regal, black label and red label. All good scotch. I tried some scotch called "swing" which was pretty good.

Get wine, or scotch.. or both...

I would prefer a bottle of Veuve Cliquot over most other 'gift-worthy booze' any time :D

Wolf Blass is a good wine. I enjoy a blush Corbett Canyon sometimes with dinner.

I enjoy "dressing" up the gift. For example:

Vodka ~ gift basket + 2 cheap martini glasses + vodka + cranberry juice = cool gift.

You can do this for any type (i.e. brandy, gin, cognac, etc), but don't forget to match the type of glasses. It's inexpensive, and presentable. I hate handing people booze in the brown baggies. :(

Expensive one malt scotch or whiskey and bourbons all speak for themselves. No gift wrapping needed.
