Friend 2 Friend (attn Rhia & Maria)
Today the Friend 2 Friend Social Learning Society came and did multiple presentations to different grade levels at the school I work at.
They do different presentations such as puppet shows or simulation games aimed at primary, intermediate and adult age groupings. The aim is to teach empathy and how to be a good friend to someone who has a developmental disability, such as ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).
I was sooo impressed with the way they explained what it's like to live with ASD and how to get to know someone who has ASD to the kids at our school. I got to take part in the simulation game that is aimed at reaching the intermediate students. It tries to demonstrate what it's like to live with hyper- and hypo-sensativitly to the stimulation of the five senses. What an experience! You have to try to preform a task while being bombarded with stimulous overload (I won't ruin it by saying what). WOW! Then it talked about the most positive way to go about getting to know someone who has ASD.
After seeing the presentation first-hand I'm sure that it has opened the minds of so many of the students at our school and I think that is an experience they will keep with them. One of the hardest parts of my job is teaching empathy and tolerance to people. I think I might have a better idea of how to go about it now, but I wish more people could see this...
If anyone has an opportunity to book or see the Friend 2 Friend Social Leraning Society, I HIGHLY recommend!!!
