i saw this a few years back. its just a mathematical thing. basically, you'll always end up with an answer that's a multiple of 9 when you use the formula. if you look at the chart, all the numbers that are multiples of 9 have the same symbol.

66 - 12 = 54
93 - 12 = 81
..
it'll always be a multiple of 9


so yeah, if it didnt work for you then you're doing the math in your head wrong :p
