what's weird is i was watching fear and loathing in las vegas with my girl tonight. It was her first time seeing it, so i pointed out thompson where he cameos in it briefly (in the LSD scene where johnny depp says "that's me!" and looks at a guy sitting at a table, that's thompson).
I drive her home, come surf the internet, and find this out. Fucking weird!!!!!! <3 for the guy for giving us some interesting literature. |

Johnny Depp played him.. I've read a lot of his work and fear and loathing is (imo) his best work. Perfect descriptions of what's going on inside his head and what's around him at all times. |

^ not weird at all. his family wants some privacy on the matter.
my jaw just dropped when i read this. but like myra says, isnt surprising. the man had a lot of history with drugs, and probably alot of permenant damage physically and mentally. when i read fear and loathing in las vegas, i seriously considered spending my savings on drugs and spending a week high. |

in my mind, he was always a throwback. a modern-day version of the brilliant writers of the past, particularly the romantic period. a heightened, and even aestheticized view of the world, conceived in an altered state of a laudanum high, or a shit-mix-modern-drug high.
he was a great writer, with some fascinating stuff. RIP. |

A sad sad day. I can't believe he offed himself. You knew the boy
wasn't going to live forever, but you would have figured he'd die of booze or horse tranquilizers or something. Still, a fitting way to go, I guess. I'm going to smoke some hashish and down a bottle of Havana Club Especial out of respect tonight. I suggest you do the same. "He [Hunter S. Thompson] represents that dark, venal and incurably violent side of the american character" - Dick Nixon. "The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over." "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me." "The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side." |
