(ive always wanted remote power rebooters in these locations but since these machines were in cabinets with space constraints, we didn't have them.) eventually recompiled the kernel to reboot after 20 seconds of panic so usually they came back up. |

Check out http://dell.ca or any other bigger computer maker and they usually throw in Windows XP and the total price is very hard to beat.
Or just get a Mac Mini - they come with a load of nice software but you'll need to get your own mouse/keyboard & monitor. You'll have less worries about security crap. http://apple.ca Quote:

by a lot. services.msc and turn off the bloat. you totally don't need a legit copy, especially this late in the game. XP came out nearly 4 years ago, considering the HUGE security holes and limited functionality compared to a linux OS I personally wouldn't pay for it. I purchased windows 2000 since it was worth it back in the day, and don't think adding skinability but then craming your OS down my throat means I'll pay M$ for it. If you're a total newb, yeah, calling up M$ when you blew up your computer is a plus. But I'm sure you know a few people who are handy with computers. Legit, OEM XP is $90. $90 buys a LOT of beer for the guy working on your computer. Chances are, he'll fix a lot more than just the problems windows was causing. It is only $90 however. Bottom line: 1. If it's a deal when you get the system, buy a legit OS. 2. Find out which of your friends knows computers, and ask them before you buy a new system. 3. Don't get a Compaq / HP / Dell / Buck-a-day. Get your friend to build you a system. |

ah, yeah, wouldn't work if the server is up. you can get cards that'll do that too, like compaq's ribloe card, so they don't take up extra space (other than in the server). |
