I'm going to Costa Rica!

My buddy and I are gonna travel all thru out the country by bus, horseback, taxi and boat. We'll be staying in $15 to $50 hostels all over the country
I'm actually really proud of the fact that I figured it all out on my own thru the internet and a book, so I thought I’d share with you. When I fist saw a map of Costa Rica all the cities meant nothing too me. Now I can pretty much tell you all kinds of things. I almost feel like I've been there!

Here's a really brief itinerary of what we're gonna do

Night 1 & Day 2 we're gonna party it up in San Jose. Explore the capital. Make our way to San Perdro cause that has the university party crowd

Day 3
we're gonna take a bus to La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano
This will be one of our most adventourous days
The Volcano is Always erupting day & night.

On our way there we're gonna go rappel down some waterfalls

In the night we'll end up relaxing in the Tabacon hot springs which are heated by the Volcano
[a]http://www.arenal.net/tabacon/hot-springs.htm[/a]

Day 4
we're gonna make our way by Horseback, then boat across Lake Arenal
[a]http://www.monteverdeinfo.com/horseback.htm[/a]

4 - 5 hours later we'll end up in a place called Monte Verde Cloud Forest. It's a rain forest filled with hundered of species of tropical birds like parrots and toucans. We'll also see lots of monkeys, sloths etc etc.

It's best to see the cloud forst from the air so we're definatly gonna take a canopy tour. [a]http://www.canopypago.com/[/a]

Day 5
we're gonna take a bus [a]http://www.costaricabybus.com/[/a]
to The city of Puntarenas. We're gonna check out the town for a few hours. Have lunch and stuff.

But we're not staying there. We're gonna take a ferry across the the Nicoya Peninsula and take a cab to Playa Montezuma. [a]http://www.nicoyapeninsula.com/montezuma/[/a] This place has some of Costa Rica’s most spectacular Beaches and Waterfalls

Day 6
we're gonna Take the ferry back to Puntarenaz and then take the bus to Jaco Beach. This place is like Daytona Beach on Spring Break! Party Time!
A place for Beer, Babes and Beaches. This is also where I'm gonna try to learn how to Surf!

Day 7
we're gonna continue down the West Coast by bus to a place called Quepos & Manuel Antonio National Park where the Monkeys are just as common as the people! We're gonna do a day hike thru the jungle and there's tons of nightlife there so we'll have a blast I'm sure.
If I can learn surfing I’ll try it again. The Beaches here are second to none

Day 8
we're gonna hit the 3rd and last spot for us on The West Coast,
Dominical.
Here we're gonna have a Combo Horseback riding/ Hiking Jungle tour. Includes visit to ancient Indian petroglyphs and Camping over night

Day 9
we go back to San Jose for some big city life. We're gonna do whatever we do. Party it up and dance the night away

Days 10 - 14
I haven't fully planned out our East Cost part of the trip yet. But thats where we're heading
The Carribean Coast. The culture there has more of a Jamaican vibe and much better food

We're gonna head thru the city of Limon, and make out way down the coast.
Our first stop is Cahuita.

We're gonna do some White Water rafting around here.

Further South is Puerto Viejo. We're gonna go Scuba Diving there. It's got one of the nicest Coral Reefs in the world!

I think I'm gonna have the time of my life! I've been dreaming about this for a year now and it's finally coming true =)

don't flash your new camera around too much in San Jose, and expect to meet some seriously sketchy people... San Jose is a bit of a hole, I lived there for a year and a half. The saying goes "There's only two kinds of gringo in San Jose... those who aren't wanted in their home country, and those who are *wanted* in their home country!"

also, don't be too sad if you don't actually get to *see* Arenal... they don't tell you in the tour books, but it's actually covered with clouds about 300 days of the year. We went there four times, and never saw the volcano itself. Tabacon is *awesome* tho, definitely hit it up - expect to pay $50 USD per person to get into the spa tho!

In Montezuma, rent a quad and go over to Mal Pais, imho the most beautiful beach in all of CR - people live in tents on the beach and just surf all day, $5 will get you a meal with three lobster tails and french fries. The white sands and iguanas in Manuel Antonio are pretty awesome too tho, and the parks are awesome.

Sounds like you're going during the rainy season tho... it's not so bad, it doesn't rain *all* the time, but it does rain *every* day for at least a few minutes. Everything is super green tho, so it's ok.

Also consider hitting up Playa Conchal if you're in the neighborhood.

On the carribean coast, definitely hit up Puerto Viejo - excellent town, lots of rastas and weed, and one of the best party places.

Oh, btw, Quepos nightlife actually kind of sucks.. the best spots for nightlife are Tamarindo and Jaco. If you want info on what's happening in San Jose or San Pedro, let me know, I still get emails about club happenings...

^awsome thanks for the info!

Yup I knew about the cloud cover on Arenal. Crosses fingers. That rainy season starts in late April. Most internet sites and books say that it gets only 4 days of rain.
We're going April 4rth to 20th so hopefully we'll miss most of it.
I heard the Carribean side rains a lot more and has more rain

I'll take your advice and rent a quad and go over to Mal Pais. Sounds awsome
thanx man

any info you got about clubs in San Jose/San Pedro if you could forward them to agroculture1@hotmail.com that would be great!

if i were you, i wouldn't want to spend so much time in san jose. i'd actually fly down too the liberia airport and then go from there. liberia is much smaller and you'll be through customs and what not a whoooole lot faster. if you go to liberia, i've got this really nice hotel i can recommend to you. it's snazzy.

if i were you, i wouldn't rent a quad in montezuma to ride to malpais. it's an hours trip and i would have probably gotten lost. there's this tour you can take at montezuma where you take a boat to tortuga island, you get too spend a day there to either scuba dive or snorkel. then they cook you lunch and then you get free time and then you boat back home. very pretty, it's a private reserve and has a domesticated wild bore you can pet! one of the girls that works there is named laura, she was cool. montezuma is filled with hippies, like disgustingly, it's big on yoga. we stayed at this hotel and rented out a cabin, it was neat. it had a hammoc and rocking chairs so that youcan sit outside and drink beer and watch the sunset, fucking eh! oh and the waterfall...meh. i almost busted my sandals hiking up to it.

i'd take a couple days in malpais/carmen - they're very small towns and right beside each other. rent a quad or motor bike and check it out, it was definitely my favorite place outta my trip. i learned to surf in malpais, i dont' remember the name of the place but andy is the owner, instructor and very very good. one of his employees is actually from richmond, and very hot. there's this restaurant, got a jamaican feel, has a fire pit right on the floor where the chef bbq's up chicken and shit. fucking yummy! we stayed at this hotel called blue jay lodge, it has tree housese...MOTHER FUCKIN TREE HOUSES! kay actually they lie, it's just a house on stilts amongst the tree's high up. but it's rad, at night it gets hella dark and noisy as shit with all the nocturnal guys coming out. one of my favorite hotels, had bats surrounding it and stuff. if you go, get the highest house up. there's a club kinda thing there, and i think they actually had a dnb night once. fuck i loved it there, go out too the beach and watch the sunset it's fucking amazing. find a pretty girl and take her out too the beach during sunset and i'm sure you'll be getting laid.

i was kinda disapointed by arenal, i saw no eruption but it was probably too early in the season :( but there's this tour company called BOBO something. it's a family run business and they are fucking AWESOME. he hooked us up real good and helped us out, he even drove us back too the airport with his family (they were on their way there) for a very small fee while it would have cost up $100 to cab. either way, pleeeeeeeeease go there if you can they're really cool and they know english and let them know i sent you! hah. uhm there's this cave tour you can go on with bobo. it's really awesome, you drive up too this cave and then a guide takes you in. i mean pitch black dark, bats, cool rocks and shit. it's really really cool and if you like adventure you'd fucking LOVE it. there's a casino in arenal, it wasn't even open when i was there, so pffft. there's a discotheque, supposedly it's a happening place. oh and the hot springs, fuuuuck yea there's a swim up bar! like a dream come true but really pricey in costa rican standards.

i can go on, i hit up monteverde as well. add me too msn kellytodak@hotmail.com if you want some more tips and what not.

Heh. Actually, Mal Pais is only an hour trip from Montezuma if you take a car, because you can't take a car over the mountain, though you can do that on a quad. It's a half-hour trip on a quad, and worth it, imho. We rented a quad in the morning for like $50 (with a $300 deposit, iirc) for the day, spent valentine's day on the beach at Mal Pais and watched the sunset, then drove back to Montezuma in time to go out to the bars and drink. :) Here's some pics from that trip: http://reelgeek.com/images/photos/20...nes_montezuma/

Actually, in the worst part of the rainy season, it's a four hour drive, 'cause the one-hour road washes out!

I dunno, I thought swimming in the pool at the base of that waterfall was one of my favourite parts of Montezuma. The guy in the picture (see him halfway up the cliff?) was diving off the top, and there were loads of fish in the water... so clear, and nice and cool, tho not at all too cold.

My girlfriend has a billion pics of our time living in Costa Rica up on her website, well organized and thumbnailed - http://reelgeek.com/photography.html - we lived there from Sept 2001 until March 2003. Check it out, lots of pics of the places talked about in this thread.

yea we cabbed too malpais, took bout an hour. i wouldn't want too atv up there tho, too risky for me. getting hurt, running out of gas, getting lost, nooo deal. i enjoyed staying in malpais for longer as well, i loooove it there. montezuma was too hippyish and touristy.

that's crazy you had too pay a $300 deposit, all they asked from us in malpais was a passport!

as for the waterfall...the guy i was with was too pussy to get into the water so i didn't jump, i just kinda waddled out got a picture taken then left. i'm not much of a risk taker, breaking my neck jumping down from the waterfall would not be cool. oh but my friend stepped on an ants nest on the way up and got bitten a couple of times, hah.

either way, to each their own. costa rica is fucking beautiful, i would love too go again.
