Absinthe legalized in Switzerland, March 1st 2005
Swiss face sobering future after legalizing absinthe
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/f...-absinthe.html __________________ Absinthe, also known as the 'Green Fairy' and 'Madness in a Bottle', was banned in most of Europe by the early 20th century. The aniseed-flavored drink was linked to violence, depression and hallucinations. Van Gogh is believed to have been under the influence of absinthe when he sliced off his ear. The Swiss have decided to legalize the drink again in the hope of boosting their economy. The drink is known locally as an aperitif and folk-remedy Even though the drink has been outlawed since 1910 local bootleggers still make the drink and locals still admit to drinking it. One bootlegger who makes an absinthe called 'La Clandestine' sells his brew for around $35 per bottle. It was legalized on March 1. |
