EXTRA EXTRA! Get your FREE daily paper here!!!
Has anyone noticed the influx we've suddenly had of free daily newspapers? It started with 'Metro' a few weeks back but in the past two weeks I've noticed now '24hrs' and as of yesterday 'Dose'.
I wonder why they've all come so suddenly. There was hardly any time between the first one to the third one. Basically, it's not like there has been enough time for the people doing Dose or 24hrs to say to themselves 'Wow, we could run a good business doing this.' and actually start up a paper. My guess is that they all started with their planning around roughly the same time. I just find it odd that we suddenly have 3 free daily papers that we didn't have even a month ago. Either way, has anyone checked them out? I've read Metro a few times and I grabbed a copy of Dose this morning just to see what it's about. |

dude, every morning my commute is dodging all the free papers people want to throw at me. None of them are very good. I've even noticed that the Vancouver Sun is starting to be given away free @ Burrard station on more than one day. It's too weird!

Read the book "East Van", by local author and punk musician Chris Walter. The downtown eastside makes a bit more sense when you see what's actually going on underneath.
Here's a clip, worth reading: http://www.punkhistorycanada.ca/CONT...=15&art_id=105 |

'Dose' lost my readership the first day. What kind of newspaper calls themself 'Dose', but puts a picture of a girl on the cover, saying "We don't need leaders who are rich or can invade countries, we need leaders more like the Pope."??!??!?
Yeah. Sure. Church and State should be more intertwined, because that ALWAYS WORKS OUT GREAT. Fuck, did they stop teaching history in high school or something? |

I've read shit like it before. But you have to think, they put themselves there... It was their own choice at the start, maybe not anymore, because of what its become, but at first, it was their choice. |

I've also been wondering about these new papers that just popped up all at once. I too have been handed '24 hours' every day this week by those paper people and in being nice I took them and ended up reading through it briefly at work. That one is alright.
But today I picked up 'Dose' and this one is better. Actually pretty cool, as is their message (see www.dose.ca ... http://www.lggmedia.ca/minidose/about.asp). Interesting, brief, art inspired and focused thoughtful articles geared toward 18 - 34 somethings. I'm actually impressed. Calling the 800 line for Dose to find out more a recorded message with a bloke speaking in an english accent tells you button options and at the end goes "or just hold on the line to speak with Melissa, she's lovely!" Hahaha gold! I suspect this is just the wave of the future as free publications have been popular in other cities (London, NY, Sydney) for quite some time now; offering a diversified, modern and cultured younger voice aside from the conservatism of arcane and traditional media (i.e. Globe & Mail, National Post) that we've been stuck with all this time. Yay we are getting with the times! |
