Welcome to Canada, eh: where our police and judicial system have better things to be doing than imprisoning teenagers for being rebellious. [not that a $2000 dollar fine wouldn't suck. But its a little different than being booked for say, grand theft auto] |

I dont think it would be more severe for Americans. What really strikes me about the difference between our law and yours is that ours is a city bylaw and yours is like, a federal statute (Cause it makes so much sense to have a unified national law for an essentially local matter like graffiti, but not to have one for something like election guidelines... riiiiight...). As a city bylaw, I dont think they really put that much muscle into it, and I doubt they've bothered to come up with special provisions for foreigners.
Actually, technically I imagine the penalty would be actually lighter... in the sense that since they just write you a ticket you could just leave and not pay it. They can't enforce it if you don't live here! I remeber when we'd go down to washington as a kid and my dad would get speeding tickets and just laugh because he never paid them. These days with computers though, its hard to know if they'd maybe be able to keep better track of you and stop you at the border next time you were comming up. Though the worst they'd do is probably make you pay it. |
