thats a nice aquarium!! my roommates and I have tanks, but no fish, snakes and lizards though...when I was younger my dad and I had a killer fish tank setup, it was a 75 gallon tank with tons of fish in it, then I came home from school one day and the glass had cracked under pressure I'm assuming, but all my fish were flopping around on the gravel..... one of the worst days of my life :(
does your parent's carry any reptiles at thier petstore? if so, where abouts is it, and can you hook me up with any deals(jk)???? |

Fish tanks are sweet, reef tanks can get pretty small. I'm on the upper end of a nano reef. I have a 20 gallon long tank with a 15 gallon sump. My stand and hood are both home made ghetto style but after seeing your oak stand, I'm going to get started on one of those.
I'm tossing around the idea of making myself a custom 30 gallon shallow tank out of acrylic. All in all though my tank has been money well spent, I sit there and stair at it all the time. a 5 - 10 gallon nano reef for soft corals can be set up relatively cheaply. I opted to be able to grow anything and went with a metal halide setup for the lighting and have thanked myself everyday for it :) The shimmer on the bottom of the tank is awesome. I'll see if I can get some pictures taken in the next day or two... unfortunatly I'm just getting over a hair algae outbreak. as far as live stock goes I have. 1 black clown 1 true perc clown 1 royal gramma 1 fire fish 1 six line wrasse about 20 hermit crabs of various sizes and colours 1 sand sifting star fish 1 conch about 10 snails 1 Crocea Clam 1 colony of frogspawn coral 3 colonies of pulsing xenia coral (I'm starting to frag these and will be selling them soon) 1 sun coral 1 open brain coral 1 birds nest coral 1 bubble coral 1 mushroom coral colony and a few others here and there that I can't remember I'm writing this as I feed my sun coral right now :) maybe we can keep updating this thread as our tanks change. |

^Sounds really nice.... I'm a big fan of the coral tanks. My dad chose to go with live rock, which is nice, but not nearly as nice as a coral tank.
How much do you estimate that it costs to upkeep your tank?? I'd like to get a marine tank set up but I'm wary of the costs. |

I haven't really kept track of the cost to maintain my tank but it isn't all that much, its more of a time investment really.
As far as costs go, I do a 20% water change every 3 weeks, I dose a bit of calcium for my hard corals and maybe some dkh buffer everynow and again. The rest is food, such as phytoplankton, mysis , brine etc. I'd say it costs me maybe 15 to 20 dollars a month on such a small tank. With that said I also bought a RO/DI water filter for my tap water to top up my tank and that was about $150, but I consider that a setup cost. My biggest problem was keeping a constant salinity due to high evaporation rates from my lighting but I solved that by building an auto top off bucket. I evaporate about a litre a day. www.nano-reef.com Thats where I did all my research, its a great forum. |
