Naming your daughter/son

Today myself and a friend of mine were out lying in the sun and we got onto the topic of naming kids. He wanted name his child after somebody. I on the other hand want a very unusual name for a girl, and for a boy I'd want a name that can be very easily shortened into something casual when they get older like Benjamin-Ben or Matthew-Matt. I thought it was interesting the reasons parents have for naming their kids what they name them. My name is Varney Rae, Varney after my aunt, and Rae is a character on an old show called "DALLAS" that my mom thought looked alot like my dad. There is a prime example of strange naming reasons. I'm curious of other opinions, what would you name your kid and why?

Funny you say that because my Sister's Middle Name is from "Dallas" as well. Thanx for making me feel that much older as I remember watching that Show. :p

i would name my children, based on names that i could stand calling someone for 50+ years...

i think it also helps to have a few names picked out...and see what kind of personality the child has in the first day of getting to know he or she.

you can tell in the eyes what the name should be

i LOVE the names:

giovanni
mable (dont ask why i just love it hahaha i know its old personish though!)
paris (although hilton ruined for me)
oliver

old skool kinda names...

i would never name someone after someone, but would use that name as a middle name and only ever do it to honour that person

Personally I would have to put my late brothers name in there somewhere but I would most likely use a name that is very unusual. I cold never name my kids Mike or David or matthew or anything that is used for every second child that is born.

I like uncommon names for the most part, if I have a girl I wanna name her Sienna and if I have a boy I am going to name him Adam Charles after a deceased friend who is very dear to me.

I would carefully consider my children's names. I have grown up with an unusual name... and it wasn't always easy! Now I have grown to love my unique name... But I didn't when I was younger. I'd wished I was named someting more "normal". Now there are more unique names out there, so it's not so bad for a child to have a unique name.

I haven't necessarily selected my kids names yet, bc I am constantly influenced by great new names I here in the school system (I come across a lot of kids)... I'm very fond of the names Jade Anne, and Brooklyn for a girl, and haven't settled on a preferred boys name (matt has a cute one. I'll let him share if he wants too), but would like to give him the middle name West or Westin for my grandmother's maiden name of West which she desperately wishes she'd kept.

I always loved the name Rebecca, until one day my Uncle Dave threw me off that:

DaveLeckieSr: "Never name any of your kids Rebecca."
EbboDave: "Why not?"
DLSr: "Imagine going through your life with a name like Becky Leckie!"
EbboDave: "..."

Everyone in my family has been giving biblical names. And we are in no way religious. Im gonna stray as far away from that!

Names I like

Aeva, Minoa, Samaire, Myla, Brooklynn,

Oddly, I only have a couple names pick out for a boy, but I think they have both been mentioned.

West, Dontae
