he's pope john paul's lapdog and former right hand man. the speculation is that after such a strong pope as john paul the next pope would be in essence a caretaker pope, continuing john paul's postions and not changing much. look for him to probably take less of a position on polititcs as john paul while continuing john paul's conservative stance on moral issues.
the interesting one will be the pope after clement XVI. while some hope that the church will pick a pope who might be somewhat more reform minded around moral issues, the fact is that currently i think all but 3 of the 160 or so cardinals were appointed by john paul. this is why consensus on ratzenburger to become clement xiv was reached so soon. john paul may have managed to lay a conservative framework on the church that could last for hundreds of years. |
