working abroad
who here has gone to live & work abroad? specifically any stories/experiences about 'working holidays' where you can travel around the country.
if you haven't done this, would you ever consider trying it? why/why not. annddd... where would you go? i'm graduating from uni this semester, and am determined to put off 'real life' for a few more years, so am looking into various travel/work/study options. i do have some money at this point, so am planning on spending about 8 mos to a year traveling in asia, and learning spanish in spain, but from that point on it's going to be necessary to supplement the funds. i was thinking either of ireland or new zealand, but wouldn't be opposed to teaching english in south america or asia. |

I've considered it for a long time, I just dont think I could leave for that long.
I've been looking into it recently... tho. Just to get a working visa n go! but where..ugh.. sooooooooooo many options. A friend of mine, Sonya, has been doing that for the past few years.. but just all over canada. She loves it. |

yeah i'm not sure if i could leave for that long either. i absolutely love vancouver, and am very very close with my family, so it could be tough. i spent 4 mos backpacking europe a couple years ago, and the last week i was so homesick i could barely stand it, but i think it would be different if you were staying in one place for a significant period of time, enabling you to set up the social network/etc. besides, people could come visit!

Yeh, I dunno.. I'd find it lonely mostly, I guess your more so better off if your more a social person that talks to everyone, which i am not. Or if I were to do it, I'd wanna gow ith a friend, cause then.. in a sense you still ahve a part of 'home' with you.
I went on a trip by myself for 2 weeks... didnt know anyone, except friends of friends, it was tough. But I guess after time, you jsut learn to adapt to the changes and start a new mini life. But the amount of time you can go for.. ugh.. thats the toughest part. usualy a min of 6 months.. Iuno about that. |

im going to be leaving for japan in november to work for 6 months to a year. it's kind of a trip to think im going to be leaving all my friends and family behind to goto a country where i barely speak the language. but the best advice i can give to you is just make a decision as early as possible and stick to it. i've had these plans for a couple months now, and more than often i find myself second guessing them. you are probably going to have to sacrifice alot, ie: social life/family/money but just keep in mind how stoked you will be when you get to wherever you are going.
one other thing, depending on your choice in job, going overseas and working can be a huge boost to your career. to be able to go overseas and bust your ass in a strange foriegn evironment shows that you are commited and versatile as a worker. best of luck. rant over. |

I spent a summer as a student on a working-holiday.
Don't expect huge bucks to be flowing through your pockets. At best, it will help cover your living costs, and maybe help for your travels, onward. It was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had. Based out of London, and doing trips around the UK and Europe. Meeting, travelling with, and living with people from all over the world will give you a better world-vision, as well as making you a better Canadadian, by making you appreciate just how fantastic this town is! Frosty (DO IT!!!) |

i wouldnt mind going to asia and teaching english for a year or so, but i would be worse off when i return then i am now(finacial and educational wise). do it while you are not tied down to a career or family, and are still willing to rough it a bit. ps:ill be in angkor by mid june. yeahhh!!!! |
