Whats Reasonable Drinking and Driving?
Last week I finaly got my calss 5 licence *HORAY*
The first thing my tester says to me is, "Congradulations, so now you have NO RESTRICTIONS." First thought "now I can drink and dirve". Ofcorse im not going to get smashed at the bar dt, puke my guts out and try to drive home after a couple of shots; but with all the lectures, MADD, and hearing of others dieing becuase of ppl who drink and drive I start to feel guilty and wonder whats ok? Personaly Ill let myself have 2-3 drinks if im driving. Depends how early in the night I have them, how I feel, and ill try to mix it up with virgin drinks and food just to make sure. However more and more I get the impresion you shouldnt drink even AT ALL. Freinds seem to give me a bad shrug even if ive only had a few. So im asking... What should be a person's limit? What do you feel is safe for you and your frinds? Where does drinking and driving become dangerouse? Or should ppl not be aloud to drink anything no matter what? |

well if I am gonna party and get smashed either I am gonna passout somewhere whether if its in the vehicle or renting a hotel room for a night or what not. I basically put a zero tollerance on myself when it comes down to myself driving or the condition on the driver if I get a ride. As much as I get smashed out of my mind, I still know right from wrong. I know whats happening and know the proper decisions to make. I've had to many friends get killed because of drunk driving. Thats why it scared the shit out of me from getting a drivers license for a number of years. So ya no alcohol in my blood when it comes down to driving PERIOD. And peer pressure to drink especially when I know I am going to be driving doesn't work on there half. I just completely ignore them.

The standard rule is a drink an hour on average... I'm guessing it varies depending on size and weight. This is the LEGAL restriction.... I remember all the BC Liquor Board commercials that preached the drink an hour deal.
A drink is considered 1 beer, or one ounce of spirits or liquors. Pretty easy to monitor really. If I've kept within this limit I feel pretty comfortable driving... I'm the type of person that if I feel the slightest bit too tipsy that I won't drive and I'll wait it out. Not worth either losing your licence or killing someone. I drank a double once, and that was almost too much when I went thru a road block and had a breathalizer. I blew under, so I was still safe to drive in my eyes and those of the law... However, I'd just rather have one or none.
*edit: No one needs a DUI charge, but especially you and I don't need those looming over our heads. Aside from the potential harm you could cause someone, if you have a DUI and are going for things like a class 4 or need a driver's abstract for work, it's game over. And in our line of work, a class 4 and clean driver's abstract are fairly common requirements. Last edited by veN; May 09, 05 at 10:05 PM. |

You can have one drink, blow into the breathalyzer and fail.
You can have 10 drinks, blow into the breathalyzer and pass. I'm guilty of D&D and have had both situations I stated above happen. Everyone is different, each body processes the alcohol at different rates. Combined with over the counter medication or whatever you had eaten earlier can effect you as well. There is no "safe" amount you can ingest and pass. Just because you blow and pass, if you reek of alcohol the officer can give you a 24 hour suspension anyway. I'm not going to preach to you to not D&D since I have broken that rule myself but considering you just got your license I wouldn't flirt with the idea of losing it right away. I'm also pretty sure they won't be very lenient to new drivers as well. |

what a question. its sort of pointless to give a specific number of drinks since everyone has their own level of tolerance to certain drugs.
heres my advice: if youre not sure how much is too much, dont drink at all, or have a friend that will dd in case you drink too much, but really, it sounds like a silly situation to say "ok whoops, i shouldnt have had that last beer, im unable to drive now". yes i know it happens, but, if you dont know your own body well enough to determine how much too much alcohol is for you and how it might impair your driving, then you are an irresponsible drinker. it also depends on speed of consumption and also, on what conditions youre drinking. i know i can go patio drinking and finish half a pitcher without being worried about "drinking and driving". if one drinks while playing in/exposed to the sun for a long time (over 1 hr give or take), expect to get drunk fast. dont forget that it also depends on how full your stomach is, its obvious that one can get drunk real fast with an empty stomach. i dont like the term "drinking and driving", i still have my N (although i coulda got my class 5 a while ago), and i have no fear in drinking a few beers then driving home, i never drive home drunk. its "driving while drunk" that people should be scared of. |

I think consuming any type of alcohol before driving is retarded. That's about the only rule I would stand by with the N restrictions. I don't see a reason for someone to be intoxicated and increase the percentages of indangering other people around them.

My thoughts on THe Gov's get tough Program
Okay, I see this thread is going with "Don't do it " theme.
But, lets inject some food for thought, shall we. Alcohol is pretty much a constant in our society, nearly everyone consumes it. Lawyers, doctor, Firemen you name it (not to mention our premier)/ Lets be serious, the government knows people are going to drink and drive. They also know the insane amount of money they receive in tax on booze. So after considering that everyone from the powerful ruling elite, to the lowly blue collar worker are drinkers and realizing the ridiculous amount of money pumped into the economy & government coffers; the gov has decided to aim for the middle. Aiming for the MIddle Part #1 Placate MADD & booze haters by pretending to get tough on drinking and driving: you know : suspend some licences ect Do this while realizing that 99.9% of the rest of the people you didn 't catch will be driving home tonight. There by turning it into an odds game. Has anyone ever wondered why club and bars need such big parking lots? If those were all for designated drivers, they 'd need their own bar to hang out in. |

again. there is a difference between DRINKING and driving and driving while being drunk. im not trying to encourage drinking and driving, but people shouldnt freak out over one, uno, of "any type" of alcoholic beverage. |

zero tolerance for drinkin and driving.. even if you have a regular license you can still get a 24hour for having one drink... depends if the cop is an asshole or not |

i actually find i'm a better driver when i've had a few drinks because i'm so paranoid, and therefore incredibly conscientious. my shoulder checks and adherance to posted speed limits would make my young drivers teacher proud. haha. however, i've only ever driven after drinking twice, and both times i was sober and there was no other alternative. it's not worth the potential legal problems. buses, taxis, and DDs are your friends. :)

Shawn: My Right to serve Alcohole certificate in Australia told us;
males = 2 drinks 1st hour and 1 every hour after females = 1 drink every hour However personaly I think it should be at least 2 hours Nev: Your so right and thats another thing I forgot to mention as were role modles and preach to young high school students not to drink and drive. I absolutly fear to death ever killing or harming anyone after ive had a few drinks. Vitamin X: I think you made a great point. Its pretty standard to have say a beer or class of wine with a meal and drive an hour later. I perosnly dont see anything wrong with that. Winston: Yeah I have no idea how you could blow over even with one drink!?! Thats what scares me about even drinking at all. However it all depends for some reason. Sometimes I could have half a martini and feel smashed... yet another day I could have 3 coolers and feel nothing? Would depending on how you feel predict your % on a brethalizer?
