cool hospital day!!
a girl let me help her do a complex dressing today.
her patient had just undergone a fasciotomy. IT LOOKED SO COOL! *warning graphic for some!* kinda like this http://www.trauma.org/resus/teamlead.../scene024a.jpg except this patient's bone was visible. the patient even told me to take pictures of it. one of the coolest things I've seen outside the operating room so far! --Joanne :P Last edited by Joanne; May 18, 05 at 07:04 PM. |

after a traumatic injury, a lot of inflammation, pressure/tension can build up within the fascia and so the removal of it allows for it to prevent further tissue death. and the "bottle" inside the leg is actually a muscle. --Joanne :P |

I don't know what happened to that person's leg in the picture, that was only to demonstrate what a fasciotomy may look like.
I actually don't know all that much about fasciotomies, as it wasn't my patient. but from what I know, the patient who I saw has some sort of accident, involving a huge piece of glass shattering into her arm. she almost bled to death, but was lucky because someone wrapped a belt and a piece of cloth around her arm right on time to prevent this from happening. and they don't stitch it up because you want the connective tissue to grow back into that open space, thus making the fascia longer. --Joanne :P |

the problem with those reality tv shows is it fails to depict how mundane the whole surgical process can be at times.
I've seen maybe 6 types of surgeries but I've never been interested in staying for the whole entire procedure because it gets really boring. most of the surgery goes like this: "ZZZZZ" (as the the surgeon proceeds to cauterize. he does this for about 1 second) *wipes the area down the area* "ZZZZZ.... ZZZZ" (as the the surgeon proceeds to cauterize. he does this for about another second) then, depending on what the process is, repeat this for about another 1-2 hours until the surgeon finally gets down to the area that needs manipulation or removal. yadayadayada. don't get me wrong, I find surgeries interesting.. but after a while.. it's just the same old thing being repeated for an hour or so until something neat finally happens. mind you, I've never physically seen an emergency surgical procedure, or anything involving a scope.. perhaps those might be more interesting.. but I guess I'm more of a blood and gore kind of gal. --Joanne :P Last edited by Joanne; May 24, 05 at 06:28 PM. |
