I was a framer for 10 yrs and got into various other trades through that. I know a fair amount about plumbing, electrical, drywalling, flooring (I've done tile, hardwood, laminate, and carpeting) etc...
I've always loved watching a project start, come together and finish. You get a real sense of accomplishment in seeing your jobs go to completion. The only major downfall is that it's hell on your body. I finally realized that my body was taking a hell of a beating for a relatively small paycheck. I mean I guess I made good money but in retrospect it wasn't worth the toll it took on me. My back is pretty much perma-fucked. If you can be smart about it and careful you can make a good career out of trades. The opportunity to run your own business is defintiely there! |

As a surveyor, I don't know if I'm allowed in this thread. I do get paid to play in the dirt though. Or sometimes in the bush.
Sounds like a I got a lot of machete work ahead of me the next few weeks... today I not only slashed through brush, but also had to take down 3 or 4 small trees! Woo! But I'm kind of jealous of people who works as carpenters and such.. my brother did some of that type of stuff, and he bugged me about it once. "Yeah, so I can apply the stuff I learned and do my own home reno, whereas you can take your skills and... do nothing with them." :-/ I think I'll bring a machete the next time I meet up with him.. HOW'S THIS FOR APPLYING MY SKILLS YOU ASSHOLE!!! *HACK* *HACK* |

I was a Construction Labourer about 4 years ago. Got paid well but was laid off 'cause we finished the Project. Now I've got 3 years of experience as a Ramp Services Agent. So I deal with the Aircraft from the moment they come off the Taxiway until they leave for Take-Off.
