Apple iBook

My friend just got a 12" iBook, pretty nice. He ordered it online from apple.ca, it was made in Shanghai China and got here in 8 days.

For a quicky test we hooked it up to the internet with the Linksys wireless router/cable modem at my place, works fine. Also played some music into good headphones and into the stereo and it sounds good, better than most standard notebook internal sound cards. The iBook hardware and software seems very well designed but we haven't quite figured out OS-X. I'll get a crack at using this Mac soon for a test run.

Couple of questions for any iBook users out there:
- We played a DVD onto the iBook screen and it's good. But how good is the video quality from DVDs played from the iBook thru an adapter to S-Video to a TV? The adapter is $30 and I said he should just get a regular DVD player for $50, save dorkin with the iBook and cables everytime he wants to get a DVD and maybe the image on the TV will be better than from the iBook/adapter cable.

- is there a good P2P for the Apple world? Limewire?

BTW he wants to use dial-up internet from AOL using a free dial-up account from AOL for a month (sheesh such a cheapy, he should get his own hi-speed). I'm trying to convince him to get the Airport Express and a hi-speed net account.

ssx is same essentially as for the Windows world (same network of mostly electronic music)?

My friend probably wants more pop type stuff, I guess that would be Limewire or Azureus?

If you're friend and you are totally new to Macs like I was, this thread helps a LOT.

Linky

It pretty much has all the info and people's opinions on which Mac apps you should get, which are free, etc.

I remember how awkward it was when I switched. And how much I missed MSN for Windows (MSN for Mac sucks, download Adium X).

try mlmac for p2p as well, it hooks you up to soulseek, edonkey and a couple other networks

torrents are the way to go though

oh yeah, just buy the dvd player, I'm sure the quality will be just fine with the ibook but coming from someone who has a laptop, its just a pain to always have to hook the computer up to the tv.
