Don DeLillo on raving
i'm reading Don DeLillo's book 'Cosmopolis' right now and the main character steps into an old theatre while a rave is going on. i thought this part was pretty cool:
"He looked at Eric and smiled at the idea of being here, among American teenagers in stylized riot, with music that took you over, replacing your skin and brain with digital tissue. There was something infectious in the air. It wasn't the music and lights alone that drew you in, the spectacle of massed dance in a theatre stripped of seats and paint and history. Eric thought it might be the drug as well, the novo, spreading its effect from those who took it to those who did not. You caught what they had. First you were apart and watching and then you were in, and with, and of the crowd, and then you were the crowd, densely assembled and dancing as one."
best part of that quote is the part about the music replacing your skin and brain with digital tissue. i thought that was really cool.
anyway, it's a really wicked book. it's all about this one billionaire in new york and the entire novel is just one limo ride through new york and all the things that happens to him while he's stuck in traffic and such.
